This Is How Long Chin Filler Lasts, And Why It's The Easiest Aesthetic Tweak For 'Perfect Facial Symmetry'
Published on Jul 16, 2025
Several years ago, after considering it for a while, I decided to take the plunge and finally get a little filler in my top lip. I'd always had a naturally full lower lip, so I was just seeking a touch more balance. Little did I know, I'd leave the office of Dr. Wassim Taktouk with more than I bargained for: chin filler.
Let me explain: while discussing my desired results during a consultation with Dr. Taktouk, we decided what I actually was looking for was profile 'balancing.' Essentially, it wasn't just that I felt my lips were a little out of proportion with each other, it was that I had never really liked my profile in general, and believed other features on my face (such as my nose, which FYI, reader, an ex used to lowkey bully me about) slightly 'took over.' The answer? A touch of hyaluronic acid-based filler in both my top lip and chin, which was a small, easy fix that could bring back some of my confidence.
This speaks to one of the most common reasons filler is injected into the chin; most who get it, do so because of the harmonizing effects it offers to the rest of the face, particularly for the side profile. I am much more confident about my profile (and my face in general) now; things just feel more balanced, meaning it's a procedure I will likely get for the rest of my life if I can (my doctor now calls me 'the chinfluencer,' which gives me endless laughs).
If you've been wondering what on earth chin filler is all about—from the reasons it’s used to the price and pain levels—I've got the answers for you (along with some great expert hook-ups).

Why get chin filler?
So we've already touched on one of the biggest reasons chin filler is used, and that is for profile 'harmonization.' Essentially, a little filler in the chin can bring it forward, meaning it's more in symmetry with the rest of your features. As an example, mine has made my nose look smaller from the side, as it's in proportion to my lips and chin after filler was injected in both areas (in small amounts).
However, there are other cases in which it is favored by aesthetic doctors. "Chin filler corrects structural imbalances in the lower face—advancing a recessed chin, improving vertical height, and adjusting width to suit individual proportions," explains Dr. Vishnu Nathan, Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dentist and Aesthetic Doctor at the Taktouk Clinic. "It can [also] improve symmetry, subtly rotate or realign the chin, enhance jawline definition, reduce submental fullness, soften or define a cleft chin, and support the results of other facial treatments."
In short, it's surprisingly versatile.

What to expect at a chin filler appointment
Most (read: any reputable) aesthetic appointments will begin with a thorough consultation, with an open discussion about what you hope to achieve and the results you ideally want. With chin filler specifically, expect to be asked why you're interested in filler placed here (for example, is it because you don't like your profile or a specific feature on your face?), and whether you're interested in filler placement anywhere else for more of a generalized 'facial balancing' using filler. After this, your injector will most likely numb you with a cream, and wait for this to take effect (around 15 minutes). Next, the filler itself will be injected either with a needle or blunt cannula, depending on the desired results.
Pain-wise, you won't feel much if you've opted for numbing cream. If you've decided to brave it without (which I tend to do, but only usually because I'm in a rush and really don't mind needles!) the first injection may be a little uncomfortable, but thereafter it should be pretty pain-free due to the lidocaine that most filler contains, which numbs upon contact.
As for how much you can expect to pay for your appointment, this varies due to a range of factors, from location to your chosen aesthetic doctor or injector and the reason for the filler. Expect to pay around £400 to £800, but again, this could widely vary.

Is there any downtime needed after a chin filler appointment?
After your appointment, your injector will talk through any potential side effects, along with aftercare tips. Luckily, chin filler is relatively straightforward when it comes to downtime: "It's often considered a 'lunchtime treatment' and patients can continue with their social activities," says Aesthetic Doctor, Dr. Ivy of 111 Harley St. In terms of side effects, the most common tend to be bruising or swelling, which Dr. Ivy says is usually resolved by ice pack application. Dr. Vishnu also recommends that generally, "patients [should] avoid pressure, heat, and intense activity for 48 hours." If you do experience any side effects outside of general swelling or bruising for a short period, you should always contact your injector immediately.

How often do you need to top up chin filler?
One thing that really surprised me about chin filler is how infrequently you need it topped up in comparison to other areas where filler can be injected. For example, I tend to get small touch-ups in my upper lip every six to eight months. However, chin filler usually only needs to be re-injected every 18 months to maintain results, says Dr. Ivy; "sometimes even longer due to the positioning of the filler under the mentalis muscle." Essentially, because our chin is fairly static (in contrast to our lips, for example, which move all the time!), the filler doesn't break down as quickly. This is also due to the type of filler used in this area. "Most chin fillers are high-density cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) gels—like the Teoxane RHA range—selected for strength, adaptability, and natural movement," explains Dr. Vishnu.

With that said, this is a relatively 'low maintenance' treatment, but in the beginning it may require a little upkeep, notes Dr. Vishnu, depending on the reason for the procedure. "Mild corrections may only need one session, while more complex reshaping is often staged over two to three treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart. This gradual approach allows tissue adaptation and reduces risk of pressure-related issues. Maintenance is usually required every 12–24 months."

The final word on chin filler
As with any aesthetic procedure, you should always only make the decision to get chin filler based on your own research and following discussions with a certified professional. Making an appointment with a board-certified aesthetic doctor or injector is essential for safety and best results, and be sure to schedule in an in-depth consultation first if you need more information.
