"Beauty queen Muna Jama made pageant history when she refused to wear a two-piece swimsuit in the Miss Universe Great Britain 2017 competition," reports FM Ganal on PEP.ph.
Muna is Muslim and she said wearing a bikini would go against her beliefs. Metro notes that pageant officials agreed and told her she could "wear a cover-up if she chose."
Muna was quoted as saying, "I wouldn't wear a bikini to a beach, so I'm not going to wear one in a competition to score points."
Muna posted a photo of her caftan moment on her Instagram page. Part of her caption reads, "It takes bravery, emotional resilience, and, most importantly, surrounding yourself with strong-minded people who are prepared to make great sacrifices to welcome permanent and positive change."
Muna may not have won the pageant, but she ended up scoring big for diversity.
For the record, model Anna Burdzy was crowned as Miss Universe Great Britain 2017. She will represent Great Britain at the 2017 Miss Universe Pageant.
