Belle Will Have A New Backstory In 'Beauty And The Beast' Remake

All thanks to Emma Watson.

If there's one thing we love about Disney's approach to its series of live-action remakes, it's the way they give the characters new backstories that the animated originals didn't cover. We saw it in Maleficent and The Jungle Book, and now Emma Watson has revealed that they've slightly re-jigged Belle in the upcoming Beauty and the Beast movie.

Emma told Entertainment Weekly: "In the animated movie, it's her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle.

"I was like, 'Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn't fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?'

"So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead.

"So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor."

Pretty cool. It will be interesting to see how Belle makes use of her inventing skills in the film. But here's a question: will her dad, Maurice, still invent the wood-chopping machine that he takes to the fair, before getting lost in the woods?

Guess we'll find out on March 17th!
