On Thursday, June 8, the police and the Philippine Coast Guard began looking for the remains of Bien Unido Mayor Gisela Boniel in the waters surrounding Punta Engaño in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. The Bohol town mayor was shot dead on Wednesday night, June 7, before being dumped into the sea, according to a report on Inquirer.net.
The report notes: "Bohol Board Member Niño Rey Boniel, the mayor's husband, his cousin Kevin, and Randel Lucas, a driver, were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the killing."
According to Senior Supt. Jonathan Cabal, head of the Regional Intelligence Division of the Central Visayas Police Regional Office, the mayor's husband "told investigators that it was his cousin, Kevin, who shot and killed Gisela."
The mayor's relatives, as well as her friend, a woman named Angela Leyson, alerted the authorities about her disappearance. It is not clear how exactly they found out that Boniel had been killed.
According to Leyson, "Gisela, a commercial pilot, had wanted her marriage to Niño annulled." The couple have not been living together for five months, according to another Inquirer report.
Niño Rey Boniel claims that his wife Mayor Gisela was having an affair with a foreigner.
