In an interview with Ricky Lo published on April 10, Erik Matti says that right now, he only sees Nadine Lustre as the next Darna, after Liza Soberano. “After [Liza], I only see Nadine Lustre so far as someone who can be Darna. Very sultry. She has a lot of female sensuality and at the same time still looks tough and very Filipina. The key to casting Darna has always been someone who can look plain and ordinary in her Narda alter ego but can be tough, spunky, and can be very sexy as well when she transforms to Darna. Nadine can look all of that.”

However, his words were twisted. Some netizens began to say that he didn’t want Liza for the role, that he was rooting for Nadine in the first place.

This pissed him off. Yesterday, he began his tweet, “Mahirap magpaliwanag sa mga taong 'di marunong magbasa at makaintindi. Tatagalugin ko na.”

He continued, “Pag-alis ni Liza na first choice ko, si Nadine lang ang nakikita kong puwedeng pumalit as Darna. Pero ako lang 'yan. Depende pa rin 'yan sa ABS-CBN at sa director ng Darna.”

Erik has expressed his support for Liza and his faith in her to nail the role. When Liza withdrew from the project, he posted a photo of him and Liza on Instagram and wrote, “You would have been great for the part. I wish you all the best. Definitely, there’s life after Darna. Take care always, Hope. Don’t cry no more.”

Erik was supposed to direct the Darna film, but he backed out of the project due to creative differences. He was replaced by Jerrold Tarog.
