Gerald Anderson Gets Real About Falling In Love With Love Team Partners

He says it's inevitable.

Gerald Anderson shares that he's developed feelings for many of his past on-screen partners—something he says can be difficult to avoid, given the emotional nature of his work as an actor.

In a recent interview with Toni Gonzaga, Gerald opened up about how his early years in showbiz shaped his personal and professional relationships. Among the highlights? A candid admission that he's developed real feelings for "most, if not all" of his love team partners over the years—a reaction he says feels almost inevitable given the nature of his job.

Gerald's revelation came after a discussion on the emotional toll of his "overnight fame" after placing third in Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition 1 in 2006. "You're very vulnerable to temptation and falling in love with your partner," Toni said, to which Gerald wholeheartedly agreed.

"Aminin natin... Binibigay mo 'yung best mo sa work mo, and 'yung work mo is dapat nai-in-love ka rin sa character na 'yan. And then, itong si girl naman, maayos at kain-love-in-love din," he shared.

His honesty caught attention not just for its rarity, but also for how it pulled back the curtain on the emotional intensity behind love teams. "You know, I'm just gonna be open sa interview na 'to. Ganun talaga," Gerald said.

He went on to reflect on how challenging it can be to separate work and personal feelings in a high-pressure industry, especially when he was younger. "It's almost impossible, especially sa work natin, sa environment natin, sa situations natin na hindi ka mafa-fall... especially at a young age and everything is binabato na lang sa'yo lahat."

Throughout nearly two decades in showbiz, Gerald has been paired with several leading ladies—some of whom he also dated offscreen. These relationships, along with their corresponding headlines and speculations, have followed him for years.

But in the same interview, Gerald clarified some long-standing assumptions. When asked point-blank by Toni if he had ever been unfaithful, he responded firmly, "No." He elaborated: "Pag sila 'yung girlfriend ko, sila talaga. Walang iba, walang ano... Basta pag narinig na nag-break-up or wala na kayo, there has to be a reason."

Looking back, Gerald said he doesn't carry regrets about his past relationships. "Happy ako 'nung time na 'yun eh," he said. Still, he admitted to personal shortcomings. "At the end of the day, naging failure ako eh, because nag-fail 'yung relationship ko... I could've been a better person, a better partner… It was always me. Ako talaga."

Every once in a while, Gerald enters the public radar either for taking part in rescue operations for disaster victims or, more commonly, due to recurring breakup rumors involving his longtime girlfriend, Julia Barretto.

Recently, Gerald and Julia were again the subject of such rumors after internet users speculated they had deleted photos of each other on Instagram—an assumption Gerald denied in his interview with Toni. He expressed his disappointment that people now base relationship status on social media activity.

With Gerald having addressed and denied the breakup rumors, he went on to describe how steady and mature his relationship with Julia is today. "I want to give you [her] the world... but being with her is enough, taking care of her, sharing my burdens and my stress, 'yun pala is enough," he said.

Now five years into their relationship—and despite a seven-year age gap—Gerald shared how much they've grown as a couple. "It's deeper... Si Julia is very mapagmahal. Very motherly [...] Maraming bumps in the road, but sometimes I think blessing din 'yon, kasi it made us stronger. When you go through something like that, and you see 'yung partner mo is emotionally strong and supportive, parang you know na it was worth it," he shared.

As the interview wrapped, the question of settling down naturally came up. Gerald’s response? Direct and clear: "36 na ako, kailangan ko na ng anak," he said.
