'High School Musical' Is Officially 20(!)—And The Cast's Throwback Posts Have Us Emotionally Unwell

Twenty years ago, on January 21, 2006, High School Musical (HSM) stormed onto the Disney Channel scene and changed the game for teen musicals forever. Who didn't watch Troy Bolton awkwardly sing with Gabriella Montez and immediately start dreaming about their own East High adventures?

The success of the 2006 film eventually led to High School Musical 2 in 2007 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year in 2008, giving us more music, more drama, and more reasons why our high school years should've been a full-on musical.

To celebrate the big 2-0, fans are getting a full-on nostalgia buffet. East High is officially back in our headspace (and maybe our playlists). Welcome back, Wildcats!

The anniversary kicked off with heartfelt throwback posts from the cast themselves. Vanessa Hudgens (wh played Gabriella Montez, ofc) shared behind-the-scenes photos of the cast on set and during their snack breaks. She thanked fans for sticking with the franchise over the past two decades, adding that, "We'll always be in this together."

Our fabulous queen Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay Evans) shared even more throwback photos on Instagram. She wrote, "20 years ago we had no idea what this would turn into. I'm so grateful for what this movie has given me, and for the fans who made it what it is… And let me just say, we're still looking fabulous."

She even recreated some of her most iconic Sharpay outfits, including the legendary blue "Bop to the Top" dress. As she put it, "You can take the girl out of East High… but you can't take Sharpay out of the girl 💅✨." Two kids later, and Sharpay's energy is still unmatched.

Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth) included some photos from High School Musical: The Concert. His caption read: "From jocks to theatre kids to the next generation, I'm so grateful to be part of a project that opened the doors to the world of musical theatre for so many. WHAT TEAM?!"

Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans) and Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie) joined in at the "High School Musical 20 Years Pep Rally," the official anniversary event, interacting with fans through trivia, props, and behind-the-scenes stories.

Ashley and Lucas also recreated the iconic sibling vocal warm-up, complete with exaggerated hand movements and a (dramatic) trust fall.

Disney fully embraced modern viewing habits by releasing the full original High School Musical film on TikTok, chopped into 52 bite-sized parts.

Fans can now dive back into East High without committing to a full movie marathon (though let's be real—you probably will). Plus, sharing your favorite scenes with friends is now way too easy. We fully support sending that "Get'cha Head in the Game" clip at 2 a.m.

If that wasn't enough, all three original movies are now streaming on Disney+ until early March 2026. From summer adventures in HSM 2 to the final curtain call in HSM 3, it's perfect for a weekend rewind or a midweek pick-me-up. Longtime fans and newcomers alike can see why these movies still hold a special place in pop culture (and our playlists).

All of this HSM nostalgia has fans feeling major feels, and they're joining in on the celebration. One user perfectly summed it up: "We reached the point where High School Musical is as old as Grease was when our parents would talk about it to us."
