If you’re a Disney girl, you know Idina Menzel as the voice of Elsa on Frozen. Love teen TV? Then you probably watched her on Glee as Shelby Corcoran, Rachel Berry’s biological mom. To Broadway fans, she is Elphaba, the Wicked Witch Of The West who won our hearts with her Tony Award-winning performance of songs in Wicked like “Defying Gravity” and “I’m Not That Girl.” No matter how you put it, Idina Menzel is a big deal. She’s basically musical theater royalty.
So when she plucked three random people from the audience during her June 7 concert in Manila to sing a song with her, you can just imagine how that made them feel.
One of the lucky guys is Timmy Pavino from Team Lea of The Voice Season 2, who told Cosmo.ph that they were "randomly picked,” and “none was planned.” Watch Timmy here:
They sang “Take Me Or Leave Me”—a song Idina performed as an original cast member of Rent. Timmy explained how Idina noticed him in the audience: “My friend Michelle [Katigbak] who is Nino Alejandro's wife, was yelling out my name to Idina when she came down the stairs.” Nino is Timmy’s colleague in The Voice and he was also under Team Lea. “I was so nervous! I barely knew the song lyrically but the melody I'm familiar with. Moments like that happen all the time [to singers]. So even if it was spontaneous I didn't want to be unprepared, [so I was searching for the lyrics on my phone] haha!”
You’ll notice in the video that Idina grabbed Timmy’s phone and just started whispering to him. What did she say? “She was whispering, ‘Just let me feed you the lyrics!’” Timmy shared. “She was [also] saying ‘You have an amazing voice,’ and she was just asking me [for] my name.”
Timmy called the experience a “full circle moment of everything that has happened in [my] life so far.” He explained, "From my love for theater to everything that has happened in my life up until that point—it was a rush of emotions and memories."
So what did Coach Lea Salonga say about his Idina cameo? “She said I sounded awesome from the video and that she was proud of me,” Timmy shared. He added, “Coached by a Tony award winner, sang with a Tony award winner. Feeling really blessed!”
