It has long been rumored that Ellie Goulding briefly dated pal Ed Sheeran and now people are questioning whether her new song "On My Mind" is about their romance.
When Ed Sheeran released "Don't" in 2014, there were widespread reports that it was about her cheating with One Direction's Niall Horan while she was dating Ed, in the days before Dougie Poynter. Ed himself hinted at the fact they'd dated, saying at the time: "I mean, normal people don't hold hands if they're just friends. It was going on. And now it's not."
This year, Ellie denied the rumors once and for all, but told Elle: "I did go on a few dates with Niall, but I was never in a relationship with Ed. I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing."
She went on to say how tiring it is that women in the industry are constantly "defined" by the men they've dated (or not dated, as the case may be)—something she often talks about with bestie Taylor Swift. "It's like, you can be a great artist, you can write great songs, but the thing that everyone is going to talk about is some relationship they think you have had or not had. It's definitely something we both think happens to female artists over male artists."
Despite Ellie denying the rumors, that hasn't stopped people from drawing similarities between "On My Mind" with "Don't," claiming her new single is about the same event. The event that did not in fact ever happen, according to Ellie.
Ed said: "I gave her my time for two or three nights."
Ellie says: "It's a little dirty how the whole thing started."
Ed said: "She told me, 'I was never looking for a friend.' Maybe you could swing by my room around 10:00."
Ellie says: "Next thing that I know I'm in the hotel with you."
Ed said: "I wasn't looking for a promise or commitment. But it was never just fun and I thought you were different."
Ellie says: "You were talking deep like it was mad love to you/ You wanted my heart, but I just liked your tattoos."
Ed said: "Don't fuck with my love/ That heart is so cold."
Ellie says: "Saying that I hurt you but I still don't get it/ You didn't love me, no, not really."
Oh, and: "You don't mess with love, you mess with the truth."
Ellie has denied that the song is about Ed though, telling MTV: "I'm sorry to all the people that want it to be about someone—it's not, it's like a myth." She also pointed out: "I like guys with tattoos, my boyfriend has tattoos… but I don't mind. People can read into it however they want. It's fun to do that, I would do that too."
All we know is we love Ellie, we love Ed and we love Dougie. As long as everyone's getting along, all is right with the world.
