It was a heartbreaking moment for Filipino pageant fans when it was announced that Miss World-Philippines candidate Katarina Rodriguez did not make it to the top 30 finalists at the pageant held on December 8.
They took to Twitter to say that they appreciated her efforts in preparing for the pageant, with some urging her to try her hand at other titles.
One pageant follower voiced his thoughts on why Katarina did not make the cut, citing the fact that she and her handlers did not have enough time for the big event held in Sanya, China. Katarina was crowned Miss World Philippines on October 7, giving her only two months to get ready.
The video that she made for the Beauty With A Purpose (BWAP) portion, where she chose to highlight the situation in Marawi, was also cited as a possible factor, because it did not fit the guidelines set by the Miss World organization and was disqualified.
The BWAP is said to be an important part of the pageant preliminaries. According to an article by the npr.org posted in December 2014, “Beauty with a Purpose is what the Miss World organizers say is at the heart of the competition. That's the portion of the contest in which each contestant is judged on the impact she makes working with nonprofits, or starting her own, in the poorer parts of the world.”
In a Facebook post she made on December 4, Katarina said: “I wanted to say I am so sorry to all of the people who worked on this Beauty with a Purpose project with me. It may have been because of specific guidelines, which I was unfortunately unaware of, that I did not even cross for the top 20 BWAPs this year for Miss World.”
She added, “It hurt me that I did not qualify for BWAP more than anything else has in the past because I wanted the world to see what war and violence does to real life people."
Whatever the reason, Katarina has given her best, and she still made us proud!
