Singer KZ Tandingan brought pride to the Filipinos when she won this week's episode of Singer 2018, the second season of the Chinese reality singing competition that premiered in January 2018. KZ triumphed over her competitor and one of her biggest influences, Jessie J.
Her winning performance, her cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" mixed with Filipino rap, is going viral.
Before she won, KZ had the biggest surprise of her life when she was introduced to Jessie J. KZ was brought to tears and she told her idol, "I can't believe I'm talking to you." Jessie responded, "And I'm not your competitor, I'm just your friend." KZ laughed nervously and said, "Who would compete with you?"
KZ also shared with Jessie the story of how she was about to quit singing, until she heard Jessie's music.
"When I was in high school," she began. "I almost stopped singing 'cause I couldn't reach the high notes anymore, 'cause I had a polyp in my vocal cords. And then I heard you. And then I realized, 'So what?' I didn't have to hit those high notes to make a difference as a singer. So I started singing again."
KZ added, "Who I am as an artist now, a big chunk of that is because of you." Jessie, who was visibly moved by the story, then gave KZ a hug, which made KZ cry even harder.

Early this week, KZ announced on her Instagram account that she was chosen to participate in "China's biggest singing competition." Part of her caption reads, "I'll be coming in as a the first international challenger on the fifth episode. Please keep our team in your prayers as we step into this unfamiliar and challenging but exciting journey. Thank you, everyone! I will do my best! #DiPasisiilSaTakotatKaba".
Sure enough, she also won against those jitters. Congratulations, KZ!
Singer 2018 is aired on Hunan Television.
