During the last #PilipinasDebates2016 held at the PHINMA University of Pangasinan on April 24, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago went head to head with Secretary Mar Roxas during the Face-off segment and asked him, "In all these years, you have been shaped by the elitist background from which you come and which you operate. Do you not think that the path has been too narrow to be able to be President of the Philippines?"
But Mar was quick to point out that his "elitist backround" has nothing to do with his ability to serve the country, saying, "As Batman said, 'It is not important how you came into this world, what is important is what you did with your life.' (Editors' Note: The actual quote from the 2005 movie, Batman Begins, is actually, "It's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me.") And my life over the last 20 years has been a public record. You [Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago] have been witness to many elements of my life as we worked together in the Senate, fighting for cheaper medicines, fighting the banks, and the insurance companies for pre-needs protection for our people, fighting for economic opportunity through the JPEPA (Japan- Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement) and other economic treaties, fighting for what is good and what is right. My record stands for itself. It is not a question of how I came into this world, it is what I did with my life and how I dedicated my life to help my countrymen."
Mar, who was given five minutes to deliver his closing argument, also thanked his supporters, saying, "Every Filipino deserves more. And that is what is at the root of our frustration. Ang iba gagamitin ang ating frustration para lokohin tayo, para makalimutan natin na malayo na ang narating natin, para makalimutan natin kung sino tayo bilang Pilipino, para makalimutan natin na ang tunay at makabuluhang pagbabago hindi nakakamit sa paninisi, sa pang-iinsulto o sa pang-soundbite lamang. Nangyayari ito dahil tinatrabaho. And this is what the elections have come down to. The talkers versus the doers. Those that bring out the worst in us versus those that bring out the best in us."
He added, "This is a fight worth fighting. This is a fight for our country. Nananawagan ako sa lahat sa inyo. Rally to our cause. Katukin natin, kausapin natin, kumbinsihin natin ang ating mga kamag-anak, ang ating kakilala, mga kaibigan, mga katrabaho."
