It’s official—Margot Robbie will be playing Barbie in the first live-action feature film, which she will also produce. “I'm so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide,” she said in a statement. "Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity, and communication throughout a child's journey to self-discovery. Over the brand's almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president.”
Margot will produce with her husband, Tom Ackerley, and business partner, Josey McNamara, and the movie is a partnership between Mattel and Warner Bros. Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said, “Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life onscreen in a fresh and relevant way for today's audiences." The movie’s release date, title, and other details have yet to be released.
It’s been a long road to the big screen for the iconic doll. Amy Schumer was previously cast to play the role for a movie scheduled for release in June 2018, but she dropped out in 2017, citing scheduling conflicts. When it was rumored that Anne Hathaway would replace her, Amy posted on Instagram, “Hathaway smathaway jkjk she's perfect!! Can't wait to see it!”
