Niall Horan Said He Had The Most Unexpected 1D Moment In El Nido And Our Hearts Can't

If you needed proof that Niall Horan is still just as soft about One Direction as the rest of us, this is it.

In an interview with NME, host Nick Levine asked him about the most random place he's ever heard a One Direction song. Niall shared a surprisingly low-key but very full-circle moment from his trip to El Nido.

"It's got like a shack on a beach, and I remember hearing a 1D song called 'Never Enough'," he said, describing it as a "deep, deep cut."

The song is part of One Direction's 2015 album Made in the A.M., their fifth and final release before going on hiatus. It's not exactly the first song you'd expect to hear playing casually somewhere, which is probably why it stuck with him. It also happens to be one he co-wrote, making the moment feel even more personal.

For those of us who grew up with One Direction as a core memory—twitter bios, fan accounts, and memorizing the lyrics by heart—it's the kind of random story that instantly brings us back.

Long before that El Nido encounter, One Direction already had history with the Philippines—and if you were there in 2015, you know.

That year, the group performed in Manila on March 21 and 22 for their On The Road Again Tour, marking their first—and sadly, last!—shows in the country as a band. Both nights were sold out, packed with fans who had waited years to finally see them live.

But the timing made it even more emotional. Just days before the tour stop, Zayn Malik had left the group. The Manila shows pushed through with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, and Niall performing as four, which, at the time, felt like something fans were still trying to process.

Looking back now, that two-day concert in SM Mall of Asia Arena felt like a snapshot of a turning point, just before they dropped news that somehow shook the world of the Directioners.

A few months later, in August 2015, the band announced they would be going on hiatus the following year. By 2016, the group had officially stepped back, with each member focusing on solo projects.

It wasn't framed as a goodbye, but it definitely felt like one. Eventually, as the boys successfully released their own songs and began having their individual tours, the fans learned to accept and be happy for how the boys were carving their paths and pursuing their own type of music.

Niall's relationship with the Philippines continued, and we're sure that his super random yet memorable moment in El Nido didn't happen before 2017. 

Throwback to his interview with Candy, Niall talked about his backpacking adventures in Southeast Asia. He mentioned that while he had already visited the Philippines, he hadn't made it to El Nido yet—instantly putting it in his wishlist. "I think that was on our list the last time but we didn't get to go. We were going to go to El Nido. Next time, fingers crossed."

That "next time" didn't wait for too long. 

He came back in 2018 for his Flicker World Tour, marking his first solo concert in Manila. He filled the arena with a more acoustic, folk-pop direction of his debut album Flicker. But of course, he didn't completely leave the past behind. Niall performed the One Direction song "Fool's Gold," easily hyping up the crowd and making them emotional at the same time.

He returned again in 2024 for The Show: Live on Tour held at the same venue. This time, he brought with him his distinguished songs like "Meltdown" and "Heaven." Alongside his newer tracks, he performed "Night Changes," bringing a One Direction song back into the set.

Across both visits, he worked in select One Direction songs alongside his solo set, naturally bridging where he has been and where he is now.
