The Preview Emerging Fashion Talent Awards (PEFTA) is Preview magazine's way of giving back to the fashion industry by helping budding design talents maximize their potential as designers and turn their passion for fashion into successful enterprises.
Every year, Preview editors put forward a list of 10 new designers whose works have shown merit and distinction. With PEFTA, Preview has committed that five designers will come from graduating students of participating design schools.
This year’s student nomination process began in January. The nominees were given a creative brief to reinvent the silhouette and instructed to present a 12-piece collection. Ten semi-finalists were chosen on the strength of the sketches and mood boards submitted. One outfit–the most difficult to execute–was picked for each student nominee and a budget was provided for the execution.
A panel of judges, which included Editor-in-Chief Pauline Juan, Fashion Director Daryl Chang, designers Inno Sotto and Cesar Gaupo, fashion director Robby Carmona, and model Ria Bolivar selected the five best designs. Two students from Slim’s Fashion and Arts School, two from the School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA), and one from the Fashion Institute of the Philippines (FIP) emerged as finalists from the presentation.
Preview editors then picked five new and practicing designers who have shown potential to excel: Emir Yamamoto, Li-J Eleazar, Tipay Caintic, Nina Gatan, and Vince Tolentino.
These five designers, together with five student finalists, presented their take on silhouette reinvention through a six-piece collection last September 19 at Rockwell Tent, Makati. The finalists will also partake in a colloquium, curated by the magazine, where they will learn from the expertise of fashion insiders and gain knowledge on tricks of the fashion trade.
Preview has always used its leverage as the best-selling local fashion magazine to support young and up-and-coming talent. Through PEFTA, Preview aims to help new designers maximize their potential by giving them a venue to mingle with industry experts, fashion lovers, and retailers, as well as a look into fashion's business aspect through dialogue with leading industry players.
