During the August 16 airing of noontime show, It's Showtime!, Vice Ganda spoke up about creating a "safe space" for members of the LGBTQ+ community after news broke out about Gretchen Diez, a trans woman who was handcuffed and taken into police custody after trying to get inside a women's restroom in a Quezon City mall.
Vice shared that before the issue with Gretchen, he used to believe there was no need for LGBTQ+ members to have separate restrooms as long as Filipinos know how to respect and accept one another. But his thoughts have since changed after Gretchen's controversial detainment.
"Ba't hindi niyo na lang bigyan ng sariling CR ang LGBT para lahat may safe place?" Vice said. "If men feel that they are unsafe, if women feel unsafe, and [the] LGBT community feels unsafe, then create a safe place for everyone. Kaya nananawagan ako sa gobyerno. Create a safe place for everyone. Kung hindi kami matatanggap, bigyan niyo kami ng CR. Gusto lang po namin umihi at dumumi. Yun lang 'yon."
Gretchen Diez has since filed a complaint against the management of the Quezon City mall for violating the Quezon City Gender Fair Ordinance.
