There is no one more feared in the Game of Thrones universe than the ominous Night King, the White Walkers, and their Army of the Dead. Try as she may, Cersei Lannister and her buckets of wildfire have nothing on the leader who is coming for every single living person in Westeros. The Night King raises people from the dead to join his effed-up army with one smooth arm motion, but the creepiest thing about him is that he certainly won't ever explain his master plan to his partners in crime death or viewers. And according to GoT’s showrunners, the Night King keeps quiet for a genius reason.
Since the Night King wasn't ever in George R.R. Martin's books, David Benioff and Dan Weiss had free rein when it came to crafting the ultimate nemesis. First, Dan said they liked the idea that the White Walkers have ~history~ with humans and that humans are the reason the White Walkers are here today. (Way to go, Children of the Forest.) He explained:
"We've seen what the White Walkers do, we've seen how they perpetuate themselves and created the wights. If you're going backward, well, they made these things...So what made them? We always liked the implication that they weren't some kind of cosmic evil that had been around since the beginning to time but that the White Walkers had a history—that something that seems legendary and mythological and permanent wasn't."
David then chimed in and said he doesn't think of the Night King as evil, but simply a creature doing what he was created to do.
But if you've ever wondered why the hell the Night King never ever talks even though he did back when he was human, these guys have the answer. Basically, it's because he’s an expert at being a badass. David asked, "But what’s he going to say? Anything the Night King says diminishes him." Just something to think about!
