WATCH: How This Couple Made Their Burger Business Thrive During The Pandemic

I don't know about you, but it feels like the love for all things *vintage* won't be going away anytime soon. From photo editing apps, to home decor, pretty much everyone has been into the ~cool~ trend. Some places even go as far as designing their interiors to achieve the retro feel, and we just found one restaurant with an inspiring backstory you might want to visit. ;)

Located in San Juan City, Burger Garage is a fast food restaurant owned by Pinoy couple Josh and Alysa Albelda. They've always loved going on road trips and discovering the *best* burger places, which is what inspired them to start the business.

They started out small in 2014 with the first ever Burger Garage at their old house, and eventually opened their first official store in Makati. In an interview with Summit Media, they shared that one of the main reasons why they set up the business was to establish financial security. The couple wanted to prepare for their future, especially since they have plans to make a family and settle down.

According to Josh, "Before COVID-19, maganda yung takbo ng business namin. As in, pinipilahan ng mga tao [at] talagang maraming pumupunta.Unfortunately, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, they lost all of that. Josh said, "Umaasa lang kami sa deliveries [and] takeouts, which is hindi enough to sustain the business." And even with the announcement of GCQ having less restrictions, Alysa opened up and said that their business would still struggle, "so nag-decide kami na kailangan namin i-close yung one and only branch namin (in Makati)." Aside from closing their store, they also struggled with losing their jobs. "Ang pinakamahirap doon is sabay-sabay. Wala ka ng work, tapos namamatay pa yung business mo. 'Yon yung naging malaking effect sa amin."

But despite everything, they were still hopeful and pushed through with their idea of opening a new Burger Garage branch—this time, in San Juan City. They weren't sure if it was going to work, but still, they gave it a try. "Naisip namin kasi since nawala yung work ko, tapos nalulugi pa yung isang business, kung hindi kami magri-risk, walang mangyayari sa amin." The couple shared that they want to inspire people to be hopeful, especially during these trying times. Their advice? "Just be patient. Huwag niyong madiliin yung success."
