If you’ve ever dreamed of studying in Japan, here’s your chance to make that happen.

The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Research Students is still open for applications until May 30, 2025—and yes, Filipinos are eligible. Whether you’re pursuing further studies in science, arts, social sciences, or anything in between, this could be your ticket to conducting independent research under the guidance of a Japanese professor. Read on to find out everything you need to know to get started.

What Is Japan's MEXT Scholarship?

For over 70 years, the Japanese Government has welcomed scholars from around the globe to pursue academic research in Japan. Through the MEXT Scholarship program, Filipino students have the opportunity to be part of this prestigious initiative. On average, around 100 Filipino scholars are accepted each year across various scholarship programs.

One of the most established categories is the Research Student Scholarship, which allows recipients to stay in Japan for 18 to 24 months to conduct independent research. Applicants can also enroll in a master’s, doctoral, or professional degree program, or undertake preparatory language education before formal placement.

The program aims to cultivate global talent and foster long-term relationships between Japan and other countries. Note: this program excludes fields such as practical arts training (e.g., kabuki, factory work, etc.) and clinical training unless the student has obtained the required licenses.

Who Are Eligible to Apply for the Research Category?

Eligibility requirements for Filipino applicants include:

Must be a Filipino citizen born on or after April 2, 1991

Must be a university or college graduate by the time of enrollment

Must intend to continue a related course of study (not shift fields)

Must be able to fulfill any obligations (e.g., work contracts) before April 2026

Must be able to secure a “Letter of Provisional Acceptance” from a Japanese university after passing the First Screening

Must be willing to learn Japanese if necessary and adjust to life in Japan

Other conditions apply, such as having no current or planned scholarship from another Japanese government source and meeting visa requirements.

What Does Japan's MEXT Scholarship Cover?

This is a fully funded scholarship that includes:

Tuition fees

Monthly allowance (as of the latest guidelines: ¥143,000–¥145,000 depending on student status)

Round-trip airfare between the Philippines and Japan

Possible six-month preparatory Japanese language education (if required by the university)

Accommodation support may also be available depending on the university, but grantees are responsible for securing and paying for housing.

How to Apply for Japan's MEXT Scholarship for Filipino Researchers

1. Review the Required Documents

You'll need:

Application Form (2026 version)

Field of Study and Research Plan

Academic transcripts

Certificate of graduation or expected graduation

Two recommendation letters (from an academic and employer, if applicable)

Certificate of Health (prescribed form)

Language proficiency certificates (English and/or Japanese)

Abstracts of academic theses (if applicable)

Each document must follow the Embassy’s specified format. Documents must be written in English or Japanese, or have accompanying translations

2. Submit Your Documents Correctly

Submit one original and two copies (unless otherwise noted)

Label documents with numbers in the upper right-hand corner

Use clips or folders instead of staples

Include the signed Agreement on Document Submission

Place all documents in a single envelope or folder

3. Send Your Application On Time

Deadline: May 30, 2025 (Friday)

4. Screening Process

Applicants go through:

Document screening

Written exams in English and Japanese (both required)

Interview evaluating academic focus, research plan, and language skills
