Robert De Niro was invited as this year’s commencement speaker for New York University's Tisch School Of The Arts.
Just like any other graduation speaker, the A-list actor began his speech with formalities, greeting important people present in the ceremony. However, De Niro surprised everyone when he addressed the graduates and said, “Tisch graduates, you made it. And, you’re fucked.”
He then went on to explain how graduates in other fields such as law, accounting, nursing, and medicine probably have nothing to worry about, because their future is secured in their career paths.
Tisch graduates—aspiring actors, choreographers, writers, and directors—however, have to face the future with much courage, as they are “opening a door to a lifetime of rejection.”
“You discovered a talent, developed an ambition, and recognized your passion,” he said. “When you feel that you can’t fight it, you just go for it. When it comes to the arts, passion should always trump common sense.”
“Yeah you’re fucked,” he said. “The good news is, that’s not a bad place to start.”
