Here's Your Warning To Wash Your Pillows More Often

Since we discovered we were basically dirty humans and needed to be washing all of our possessions way more often than we had been, our monthly outgoings on washing powder have gone through the roof.

And while we are pretty strict about washing our sheets every one to two weeks these days, when was the last time you even thought about putting your actual pillows in the washing machine?

According to a new study by Dow Polyurethanes spotted on PopSugar, our pillows are a graveyard for dust mites and their feces, dead skin, and other bugs, with these things making up a third of the weight of your pillow if it has not been washed in two years. And won't that just be a lovely thought when you go to lay your head down on them this evening?

Aside from the fact that sleeping on a pile of dead bugs and their poo is really quite gross, it can also affect our health, too. According the the study, 10 percent of people and 80 percent of allergy sufferers are allergic to decomposed dust mites, which could lead to broken sleep patterns and restless nights.

And when you consider that losing sleep has been linked to bigger health problems such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, it's probably time to start thinking about getting new pillows.

PopSugar suggest that we should consider washing our pillows every three to six months to keep our sleeping environment clean, so better add them to your laundry list!
