The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that students can now ride several major rail lines absolutely free of charge.
According to agency secretary Arthur Tugade, students can now ride the MRT-3, LRT-2 and the PNR (Philippine National Railway) for free on Mondays to Fridays (excluding holidays) during select hours in the morning and afternoon.
"Inanunsyo ngayon ni DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade na libre na ang sakay ng mga estudyante sa MRT-3, LRT-2, at PNR, mula Lunes hanggang Biyernes (maliban sa holiday), sa mga piling oras sa umaga at sa hapon," the agency says in a statement released on Facebook.

Students will now also be exempted from terminal fees charged at airports under the jurisdiction of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), as well as at public ports under the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).
"Patunay po ito ng patuloy na pagmamalasakit ng Kagawaran ng Transportasyon at ng mga kaugnay nitong ahensyang MRT-3, LRTA, PNR, CAAP, at PPA, upang bigyan ng komportableng buhay ang mga Pilipino," the DOTr says.
UPDATE: The free train rides will be available starting July 1. The schedule is as follows:
- MRT-3: 5:00-6:30 am, 3:00-4:30 pm
- LRT-2: 5:00-6:00 am, 3:00-4:00 pm
- PNR: 5:00-6:00 AM, 3:00-4:30 pm
The PPA will implement the terminal fee exemption starting July 16, and the CAAP on August 1.
