Nesthy Petecio Reveals She Only *Prayed For A Bronze* So She Could Bring Her Sisters Home

The Pinay boxer is set to receive at least P17 million in cash rewards.

Nesthy Petecio is the first Filipina boxer to bring home an Olympic medal, and we're super proud of her. She won silver during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and get this: she actually only prayed for a bronze! 

In a report by 24 Oras, Nesthy shared that she prayed for a medal so she could use the prize money to bring her older sisters back to the Philippines: "Bronze lang po yung hiniling ko sa Kanya. Sabi ko, kahit bigyan mo ako ng bronze Lord, mapauwi ko lang yung mga ate ko na nandito ngayon sa Japan, may panggastos lang ako sa pamasahe nila papuntang PilipinasKahit bronze langPero binigyan niya po ako ng silver. Grabe, ang lakas po ni Lord." 

Nesthy Petecio's future plans 

Nesthy added that she's looking forward to seeing her family again in Davao del Sur and that she will be back for the 2024 Paris Olympics. "Babawi po tayo, babalik po tayong mas malakas pa po. Ang lagi ko pong sinasabi, 'Walang hinto hangga't walang ginto po."

Nesthy would actually join inter-barangay boxing competitions to provide for her family when she was growing up. In an episode of the Go Hard Girls podcast, Nesthy said:  "Nung time na 'yon, walang wala rin talaga kami. Mahirap talaga buhay namin. Makakakain kami puro utang. So ginagawa namin kapag may inter-barangaymga palaro, sasali talaga kami kasi alam namin may premyo, e. Manalo, matalo, alam namin may premyoMay pambili kami ng ulam. May pambili kami ng bigas."
