If you're heading back to school this week—or your kids are—here's something to look forward to: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has rolled out a 50% fare discount for students on the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 starting June 20.
The discount isn’t just for undergrads. The DOTr clarified that it applies to all students—from elementary to high school, college, and even those taking up master's or doctoral degrees. The discounted fare is valid every day of the week, including weekends and holidays.
"Konting tulong sa mga estudyante,” DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said. “Direktiba ito ng Pangulo na magdagdag tayo ng discount. Simula ngayong araw, 50% na ang discount ng ating mga estudyante at tuloy-tuloy na ito hangga’t hindi nababago.”
To avail of the promo, students must present a valid school ID for the current academic year. If a valid ID is not yet available, Dizon said a student certificate or proof of school registration will also be accepted. The only catch? You'll have to line up at the station counter since the discount only applies to Single Journey Tickets—so nope, your Beep card won't work for this one.

This builds on the existing 20% fare discount previously given to students. The standard fare discount remains in place for persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and other qualified passengers under existing laws.
How much are the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 fares?
Here's a look at the current fares for the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 before the student discount kicks in:
With the new 50% student discount, students can now pay as little as P8 for a quick LRT ride or P14 for the entire stretch of MRT-3. Here's the full breakdown:
