Teresita Ssen “Winwyn” Marquez was crowned Reina Hispanoamericana on November 4, 2017 (morning of November 5 in Manila, Philippines) in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.
The 25-year-old actress and performer is the first ever Asian to win the crown, beating 26 other contestants. This is also the first time that the Philippines joined the competition since the beauty pageant’s birth in 1991. According to Wikipedia, Reina Hispanoamericana “is an annual beauty pageant celebrating Hispanic heritage, language and culture.”
During the question and answer portion, Winwyn was asked, “How would you promote the Hispanicamerican culture with the great difficulty or barrier of language?”
After greeting the crowd in Spanish, Winwyn answered the question in English: “Language can be learned, but the will and determination to contribute something to the organization cannot. It has to come from the heart. It has to be natural. I believe that kindness is a universal language: that if you treat people with tolerance, patience, and love, you will understand each other.
“The Hispanic culture is not about language only. It’s about love for God, love for country, love for history and culture, and love for family. And as a Filipina with a unique heritage, I have instilled that. I am ready to promote the Hispanic culture, not just in Asia, but in the whole world. It is time to celebrate the Hispanic culture. It is meant to be celebrated.”
This is a back-to-back win for the Philippines in the beauty pageant arena. Yesterday, November 4, 2017, Karen Ibasco of the Philippines won the Miss Earth 2017 competition, held at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City, Philippines.
Congratulations, Winwyn and Karen!
