Interschool Couples—One Isko, One Atenean—Talk About Love, UAAP, And School Rivalry

'The loser will wear the other school's colors for a day!'

It's been 32 years since the UP Fighting Maroons got into the UAAP basketball finals, and with UP making history this year, interschool couples—from UP and Ateneo, specifically—find themselves on opposing sides. What's it like when bae cheers for the competition? Cosmopolitan Philippines got in touch with seven couples and found out!

Camille Villonco, 22 (AdMU BS Management) + Martin Nuque, 22 (UP Manila BS Public Health)

How did you two meet?

We met at a mutual friend’s party in UP Town Center (UPTC).

What was your first impression of each other?

Martin: I thought she was the athletic popular girl type.

Camille: I thought he was quiet, shy, and mabait guy type.

What's the most UP/Ateneo thing about your partner?

Camille: Mart goes to class in his tsinelas and pambahay.

Martin: Cami’s spare phone is another iPhone and she uses a car together with her friends when they need to go to other buildings in Ateneo.

Be honest! Have you ever fought because of school rivalry?

Martin: Honestly, no. I personally never saw Ateneans as our rivals, more like having a friendly neighbor who is also extremely rich.

Camille: For me, UP is more of an Atenean’s best friend so I never saw them as a rival din.

Do you have bets with each other based on who loses/wins the UAAP games? Please share!

We actually haven’t had one so far but we could start some future bets for fun especially with the UP team getting stronger next year!

Have you gone to an Ateneo vs. UP game together? If so, what was the experience like?

Martin: We went once! I lost and she won hehe! I was totally cool with it and she never [bragged about] her team's victory.

We usually dedicate late Friday nights and the whole [of] Saturday as our date days with each other.

What are your favorite date spots in Katipunan? Why?

UPTC! Since everything is in UPTC—our favorite restaurants and shops!

Patty Bucao, 27 (UP Diliman BA Broadcast Communication, 2009) + Klyne Aquino, 27 (AdMU AB Economics, 2009)

What's the most UP/Ateneo thing about your partner?

Klyne: She’s very independent and responsible.

Be honest! Have you ever fought because of school rivalry?

Yes, "The better side of Katipunan" is a constant debate!

Do you have bets with each other based on who loses/wins the UAAP games? Please share!

Klyne: If Ateneo wins, I have to kiss the sole of her shoe. If UP wins, nothing happens—no barter from my end. That’s how confident I am [of] AdMU winning.

Have you gone to an Ateneo vs. UP game together? If so, what was the experience like?

Klyne: Just last Saturday (Game 1), we were trash talking hard. She was onto me the whole game, and I was giving it back to her. Towards the end when Ateneo was wrapping up the victory, you couldn’t hear a word from her. That didn’t stop me from talking trash, of course. "Pikon talo," I told her. Hehe!

How do you find time to date with your different schedules?

We have busy scheds but at the end of the day, we simply find time.

Do you have bets with each other based on who loses/wins the UAAP games? Please share!

Michelle: Yes, if UP wins, our baby will have [a] second name which is "Maroon" regardless of the gender. If Ateneo wins, second name will be "Bughaw."

No, but we watch UP-Ateneo games together at home.

Jam Noblezada-Favis, 31 (UP BS Psychology, 2009) + Jeri Favis, 31 (AdMU BS Management Major in Communications Technology, 2010)

How did you two meet?

Jeri: We both volunteered at an after school learning center for young kids called TULA. We were both learning coaches there, but it took my Archie comics to break the ice!

What was your first impression of each other?

Jeri: I thought her shawl thing made her look like a lola haha! But I thought she was taken already and her boyfriend probably worked for P&G or something. (Disclaimer: I do not work for P&G.)

Jam:  He was in athleisure clothes when I first saw him; so active but chill.

What's the most UP/Ateneo thing about your partner?

Jeri:  She is so relaxed and street smart. Nothing fazes her. But only I see her kaartehan and conyo side lol!

Jam: He doesn't own any green clothing and his favorite teacher is Sir Pagsi.

Be honest! Have you ever fought because of school rivalry?

Jeri: Nope. Katipunan buddies forever!

Jam: Haha never! I never thought I'd marry an Atenean but I only have love for Ateneo. Katipunan neighbors!

Do you have bets with each other based on who loses/wins the UAAP games? Please share!

Jeri: No naman, because we both always expect Ateneo to win.

Jam:  I'm just happy UP reached the finals! They're champions for me already! I'm just happy to be cheering for my school! It would just be a bonus for me to see them win. If Ateneo wins, I'll be happy to see my husband happy!

Have you gone to an Ateneo vs. UP game together? If so, what was the experience like?

Jeri: We’ve wanted to but have never done it. We’ve been to mostly Ateneo games though, including one against La Salle, and I’m proud to say she was cheering right alongside me.

Jam: No! Not yet! Looking forward to watch soon! Maybe Season 82!

How do you find time to date with your different schedules?

Jeri: Well we’re married now! But we’re both really busy with work so we just try to make time whenever we can.

Jam: Since we are both busy, we try to schedule date nights! It's a bonus that we are married already so we always come home to each other.

What are your favorite date spots in Katipunan? Why?

Jeri: Well we’re married now! But we’re both really busy with work so we just try to make time whenever we can.

Jam: We're already based in Makati so we don't get to hang out in Katipunan often, but one of my favorite dates there was when he took me to Ateneo when we were first dating. It was nice to see someone so in love with his alma mater as he took me around his fave spots. I got to know him better 'cause of that.

Lana Ferrer Juan (UP Diliman AB Psychology, 2003) + Stephen Juan (Ateneo High School, 2000; attended one year in ADMU before migrating abroad)

How did you two meet?

Stephen: We were high school sweethearts. Our families have been friends a long time so I have known Lana since I was 12 years old. We "officially" started dating when she turned 18. We broke up when I moved to the States but somehow fate brought us back together. She moved to Washington D.C. with her family after graduating in 2003 and the rest is history. Now married 13 years.

What was your first impression of each other?

Stephen:  Love at first sight!

What's the most UP/Ateneo thing about your partner?

Stephen: UP is about service and giving back. Lana now works with special needs high school students, helping them integrate with society by teaching them life skills and providing practical employment training.

Be honest! Have you ever fought because of school rivalry?

Stephen: Proud to say we watched the Ateneo-UP game 1 LIVE on TFC. It was midnight here and it ended at 3 a.m. We were both sleepy but we both got into the game. UP has not been in contention for a while so Lana was excited to trash talk! It is a divided household currently!

Do you have bets with each other based on who loses/wins the UAAP games? Please share!

Stephen: Yes we have a bet. Loser will wear the other school's colors for a day.

Have you gone to an Ateneo vs. UP game together? If so, what was the experience like?

Stephen: I don't believe we have. It's been so long. I do remember supporting her during the time UP won cheerdance in 2001!

How do you find time to date with your different schedules?

Stephen: In 2001, I was going to AdMU but I already knew I was leaving for the U.S.A. So I spent a lot of time with her in UP I sat in classes and we hung out.

What are your favorite date spots in Katipunan? Why?

Stephen: It's been a long time but I remember two classic places: Cravings Katipunan (one of the very first times we got together) and Chocolate Kiss ( the name is memorable).

Mingkay: He's a no-fuss guy.

Be honest! Have you ever fought because of school rivalry?

Nope, because we met after we both graduated na.

Do you have bets with each other based on who loses/wins the UAAP games? Please share!

JayJay: Nope. Ateneo wins every time.

Mingkay: I completely agree haha!

Have you gone to an Ateneo vs. UP game together? If so, what was the experience like?

JayJay: Not yet, but we watched the recent Game 1 via live telecast. It was intense and exciting.

Mingkay: I panicked every time UP would snatch the lead. And I'm not even that into basketball, haha!

How do you find time to date with your different schedules?

JayJay: If you love the person, you always make time.

Mingkay: Isn't he a great catch? Haha. But seriously, though, we just make an effort to prioritize each other despite hectic schedules.

What are your favorite date spots in Katipunan? Why?

We've never been to Katipunan together pa after graduating from college.

Blanche Arreza, 37 (UP Diliman BA Film and Audio Visual Communication, 1998) + Mark Arreza, 39 (AdMU AB  Interdisciplinary Studies, 1997)

How did you two meet?

Mark: We met in Tapika, a bar in Katipunan (no less) through some common friends.

What was your first impression of each other?

Blanche: My impression of Mark—he was a snob. He was a man of few words.

Mark: It was a brief introduction but she seemed friendly and simple.

What's the most UP/Ateneo thing about your partner?

Blanche: He's very elouquent. "Tatak Atenista."

Mark: She is very down to earth, we still go on a fishballs-binge in Mang Larry's! Pancit canton and dirty ice cream are part of the menu too.

Be honest! Have you ever fought because of school rivalry?

Blanche: Only during Ateneo vs UP games where school spirit is very high.

Mark: Hahahaha,no. I have been rooting for UP to get into the Final 4 ever since we met in 2002. This year they finally went all the way. If they beat Ateneo this year, then MOST LIKELY there will be a fight.

Do you have bets with each other based on who loses/wins the UAAP games? Please share!

Blanche: Sometimes we do. Either dinner or we'll have to buy something the winner wants.

Mark: Uhm, normally dinner and drinks...or Mang Larry's fishballs do the trick.

Have you gone to an Ateneo vs. UP game together? If so, what was the experience like?

Blanche: Yes. We would frequent the games before. When the games get intense, we end up leaving the game not talking to each other. But we resolve it after dinner, hahaha! At the end of the day, love wins!

Mark: Yes, as much as we can. I still remember clearly that Ateneo-UP game wherein Ateneo star Larry Fonacier tore his ACL. The crowd went quiet as there is a mutual respect on both sides.

How do you find time to date with your different schedules?

Blanche: We make it a point that we spend our free time with each other, either just over dinner, a movie during the weekend, or drinks after work.

Mark: Dates come in all simple shapes and forms. From foodie runs and micro-movies in Matalino to finding the next steak place discovery.

What are your favorite date spots in Katipunan? Why?

Blanche: Our fave date spot before was Tapika because that's where we met. Unfortunately, it's already closed. We would now go to UP Town Center for dinner dates/drinks.

Mark: UP Town Center for movies, Mang Larry's for merienda, and Starbucks Katipunan for a quick coffee run.
