Whenever you scroll through Instagram, we bet you probably spot one (or two) women with "perfectly imperfect" hair. You know what we're talking about—this type of hairstyle is a bit messy, neither too straight nor too curly, and makes the wearer look like they just rolled out of bed. Here are a few *prime* examples:

If, like us, you want to get the same tousled tresses without having to bust out a hot tool and spending 30 minutes twisting and clipping your locks, you need to get your hands on a ~*texturizing spray*~. Don't know what that is? Then keep scrolling!

What is a texturizing spray?

A texturizing spray adds texture and volume to your locks. It makes them look matte and enhances your strands' natural bends and waves. Some texture sprays can even absorb excess oil from your scalp like a dry shampoo. It's basically like a hairspray, except it won't leave your hair feeling crunchy or sticky—you'll still be able to move and touch it.

If you're wondering what the difference is between a texturizing spray and a sea salt spray/curl-enhancing spray/wave spray, well, there isn't one. The three are all simply different kinds of texturizing sprays meant for certain hair types.

How do you use a texturizing spray on wet or dry hair?

For damp hair:

  1. On your damp, detangled mane, spritz the texturizing spray from the middle to the ends of your hair.
  2. Braid your hair as you normally would. For IG-worthy locks, we recommend you do a loose French braid.
  3. Wait for your braid to dry or use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
  4. Once your tresses are dry, remove the braid and brush your fingers through your hair. Voila!

For dry hair:

  1. Take a section—about one to one-and-a-half inches—of your hair and spritz a good amount of texturizing spray on it.
  2. Twist the same section of hair for a few seconds before releasing it. That's it!
