Did You Know? Kyline Alcantara Did All Her Makeup Looks For 'Beauty Empire'
We heard you do your own makeup on the show. Can you walk us through your on-screen glam processâfrom base to lips?
Kyline: For Shari, when she's in the office or doing her "Narayan" with Noreen, I just keep it simple but with defined eyes. I just want to keep the eyes very visible and make them Shari's dominant feature. So, you can see her most of the time with cat eye or wing liner, depending on my mood. For the rest of her look, I don't usually use foundationâjust a sheer base that doubles as primer, concealer, powder, bronzer, and blush. For the lips, just a neutral lippie with gloss.
How much of your character's makeup look was your own vision vs. the creative direction of the show? Did you pitch in any ideas? Were there pegs?
Kyline: It's really a collaborative process. During our look test, I did my own makeup already. Then, before we started our taping, I talked to our director and creatives regarding their vision for Shari and how I want to incorporate my vision. They sent me a deck, and from there I started building Shari's look together with her hair.
How long does it usually take you to do your makeup on shooting days? Are you the type to take your time, or do you have a set routine already?
Kyline: It depends on the scene, but since I'm used to my face, I can do it faster. Sometimes, [it only takes me] 30 minutes since I have a routine and I know what to prioritize already.
What makeup moment from 'Beauty Empire' are you most proud of and why?
Kyline: Of course, it has to be the gala scene or the opening sceneâI did my own makeup there. I had to redo it since those scenes were done on different days. I also had to secure and make it waterproof since we had a rain effect going. I had a lot of fun doing that.
What were the challenges of doing your own makeup on set, especially with lighting, time pressure, or retouching?
Kyline: It's really the time and expectation. They always asked me if I'm okay and if I can still study my lines while doing my makeup, but believe it or not, I find it therapeutic and it makes memorizing easy for me while I'm doing it. I can visualize my scenes already. Also, it makes continuity easier for me since I do my own makeup, so I know how to do it on our next taping day.
Did you learn any pro tips from the show's glam team or co-stars while on set?
Kyline: Not really on set, but with my personal and professional make-up artist, Ms. Gela Laurel. Sometimes I'll call her while I'm on set to have her check my makeup and ask if my routine is correct, if my contour or blush are equal, or if I used the right shade. I'm glad that I have someone like her to guide me as well and teach me, or give me tips to be better at applying makeup.
She's now joking me na wag ko raw masyadong galingan kasi baka mawalan daw siya ng work. Lol. I will always love mumâthat's what I call her. đ
If your character, Shari, had a signature makeup look or product, what would it be and why?
Kyline: It would have to be eyeliner, eyeshadow palettes, and lip products. Those are so Shari.
Did your off-camera beauty routine change while filming 'Beauty Empire' because you were doing your own makeup for the show?
Kyline: Sort of! I don't use much foundation now. Or, I use less makeup now during my off-duty days. *laughs* I just want my face to rest and my pores to breathe, even when running some errands during my rest days.
If you had your own actual beauty empireâlike your own brandâwhat would its vibe be?
Kyline: Oh, that's a hard question since I'd like to try different vibes. And, in my own time, I usually do makeup looks depending on my mood. Maybe I'll go for a fun and glam vibe. Like, neutral colors but with a pop of bold colors. Then, neutral shades for the blush, like baby pink and cherry red. For the lip products, a shade of pink, coral, mauve, and red will never go out of style.
