All iyakin girls know this: puffy eyes are a dead giveaway, no matter how much concealer you apply on your eye bags. During those times you need to de-puff your peepers in a matter of minutes, try these hacks that will calm, cool, and deflate the eye area with minimal effort on your part!
1. Raw potato slices
You've all heard of the cucumber trick, but slices of potatoes can have ever better results thanks to catecholase, an enzyme they contain which is said to speed up the de-puffing process. Just lie back and place some fridge-cold and raw sliced over your closed eyes for up to 10 minutes. Wash off any residue afterwards with cold water.
2. Aloe vera gel
Rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, aloe vera is know to soothe skin and encourage cell repair, while its anti-inflammatory properties help decrease puffiness. Loads of natural beauty junkies will tell you that the gel from fresh leaves, applied around the eye bone area, will make your peepers feel instantly fresher.
3. Chilled tea bags
Save the tea bags (black, green or white) from your morning brew and chill them quickly in the fringe. Wear them as eye masks for five minutes and the antioxidants and caffeine content will help tighten and tone the surrounding skin, increasing circulation and therefore drainage.
4. Cold spoons
An oldie but a goldie, this trick works a treat. If time allows, pop two metal spoons in the freezer for a few minutes to chill, if not hold them under very cold running water instead. Then lie back with the cup of the spoons over your closed eyes for a minute and the cold constricts blood vessels, thereby reducing swelling.
5. Chilled eye cream
If you regularly suffer from puffy eyes keep your eye cream in the fridge—when applied the active ingredients will work even harder.
6. Drainage massage
Hands down, massage is the best way to improve blood circulation and in turn encourage the removal of fluids, but as it's a sensitive area, be gentle with your pressure. To do it when applying your eye cream first tap it in with your fingertips doing a drumming action underneath your eyes, then rest your fingertips there and gently pull on the elasticity of the skin to support drainage. Next lift the upper eyelids by tapping the brow bone and gently pushing the skin upwards.
Before you go to bed:
If you know you've got a big day tomorrow, try these tricks for puffy-eye prevention:
7. Avoid rich eye creams
If you're prone to puffy eyes, avoid putting your eye products on at night as they can travel almost an inch towards your eyes which can irritate them and create swelling. If you want to use a product for hydration at night use a light eye serum instead of a cream and remember to apply it around the eye bones, not the actual eyes.
8. Add another pillow
Sleeping on your back with two pillows propping up your head could help prevent puffy eyes. The idea is that the elevation encourages drainage in the right direction—down and out.
