12 Things You Should Know Before Switching To Natural Deodorant

Your underarms will go through a lot of changes.

I recently made the switch from a chemical deodorant to an all-natural one over a month ago. And let me just say, the process isn't as easy as I thought it would be. So if you're thinking of changing your deodorant, too, you might want to know what you're getting yourself into first.

P.S. Everybody's different, so you may or may not experience some of these things.

  1. In the beginning, your pits will smell bad.

    Your body isn't yet used to the new, *natural* ingredients, so your underarms may smell horrible, as in wtf-I-never-knew-I-could-smell-this-bad bad.

  2. But one armpit will smell worse than the other.

    Which is weird, right? Though some people say your dominant hand/arm smells worse because you use it more, in my case, it was the opposite!

  3. You're going to sweat a lot.

    After years of using sweat-clogging antiperspirants, your body will go through a phase where the slightest movement will cause your underarms to perspire like they've never done before.

  4. You might get pit stains for the first time.

    If, like me, you've never gotten armpit stains before, don't freak out. It's totally normal and okay!

  5. Using a mask will help.

    Applying a clay-based mask on your armpits once or twice a week will make the transition smell better! It will suck out all the odor-causing bacteria, sweat, and toxins built up in your pores. [Via Medical News Today]

  6. And so will oil cleansing.

    Washing your kilikili with soap and water won't be enough when you're transitioning. Try oil cleansing your pits instead. This hack will give them a gentle *deep clean* and make them appear smoother and smell less pungent!

  7. A natural deodorant won't stop you from sweating.

    A deodorant will keep your underarms smelling fresh all day, while an antiperspirant will stop you from sweating. Basically, when you switch to a natural deo, you'll still sweat. But that's fine because sweating is ~*healthy*~!

  8. Finding ~*the one*~ isn't that easy.

    Just like your search for the perfect cleanser or moisturizer, you'll have to go through a bit of trial-and-error to find the deo that works for you. If you get it right on the first try, then you're lucky! As of writing this, I have yet to find the natural deodorant for me. *Sigh*

  9. You may want to avoid wearing certain fabrics.

    Cotton is the best to use because it's lighter so your pits won't sweat as much. But fabrics like polyester are like a sauna for them. Aka more sweating can happen when you wear them.

  10. It will eventually get better.

    The transition process is different for everyone. Some will only take a few days to adjust, while others can take months. But in the end, your underarms' odor won't smell as bad and you'll sweat less!

  11. Natural deos can be expensive.

    Something you may want to consider before actually throwing away your current antiperspirant. Like all chemical-free and organic products in the market, natural deodorants lean towards the pricier side.

  12. You MIGHT experience an allergic reaction.

    Since they contain larger amounts of essential oils and various extracts, if you're allergic to something that's mixed in your natural deo's formula, a reaction—such as redness, stinging—will most likely happen. (Refer to no. 8 again.)
