This classic musical film about a good girl who falls in love with a bad boy over summer break in the '50s is such a fun ride, it’ll have you LSS-ing to “Summer Nights” long after the movie’s done.
Awesome extra: Before he became the creepy old dude who planted a kiss on ScarJo at the Oscars, John Travolta was actually mighty fine.
We’ll always have a soft spot for this '80s cult favorite about a well-off teenager who starts a romance with a sexy dance instructor one summer at a holiday camp.
Awesome extra: There’s a reason it’s called Dirty Dancing. The dance moves are H-O-T-T.
Besides starring the forever-perfect Meryl Streep, the film version of the hit Broadway musical is set in a breathtakingly beautiful island in Greece, a country you plan to visit one summer in your life. (A girl can dream, right?)
Awesome extra: The campy choreography is so bad, it’s good.
I Know What You Did Last Summer
Teen slasher flicks like this one made a killing—pun totally intended—in the '90s, and this popcorn thriller about a group of friends who are terrorized by an ice hook-wielding killer one summer is a prime example of the genre.
Awesome extra: Throwback hunks Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Ryan Philippe rocking tank tops in the summer heat. Awwwyiz.
Y Tu Mama Tambien
This Mexican film about two teenage boys who convince a hot older lady to go on a road trip with them will remind you of the ~*CRAZY*~ things you did in past summers—and maybe make you want to top them this time around.
Awesome extra: Don’t bother struggling through the subtitles—Mexican babes Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are reason enough to sit through this flick.
Now and Then
This film about a group of girlfriends reminiscing about the unforgettable summer they came of age will make you feel all sorts of fuzzy feels for your own barkada.
Awesome extra: Devon Sawa, the boy your preadolescent heart beat wildly for in the '90s.
The Parent Trap
No one’s too old to enjoy this family movie about two girls who meet at a summer camp, discover they’re identical twins, and plot to get their separated parents back together.
Awesome extra: A young and adorable Lindsay Lohan playing both twins in the 1998 reboot of the film. RIP, LILO’S ONCE-PROMISING CAREER.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
This comedy about a struggling musician who hies off to Hawaii after his breakup only to end up at the same beach resort with his ex and her new beau will have you in stitches.
Awesome extra: A supporting cast that includes Russell Brand, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, and Jonah Hill = laughs all around.
50 First Dates
Another hilarious rom-com set in Hawaii, this one’s about a guy who meets a great girl who turns out to have short-term memory loss, so he has to keep wooing her EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Awesome extra: The fantastic reggae-flavored soundtrack, which includes Gwen Stefani’s “Underneath It All,” Jason Mraz’s “I Melt with You,” and 311’s “Amber.”
While there’s no beach in sight, this lovely film about two strangers who meet on a train in Europe while on vacation will have you daydreaming about the romantic possibilities summer brings. Lesson learned: Go strike up a conversation with a stranger this summer—he might turn out to be the love of your life. (Or he might turn out to be a complete asshole, but that’s a story for another article.)
Awesome extra: Fresh-faced Ethan Hawke is EVERYTHING.
