- He has humble beginnings.
"I grew up surfing in a small coastal town," Liam Hemsworth tells Cosmo.ph in an exclusive interview in Los Angeles for The Last Song, where he makes his debut as a Hollywood actor. Born into a family that isn't exactly rich, he made a living laying floors in Australia before deciding he wanted to move to the US to pursue an acting career.
- He knows the value of hard work.
- He has two gorgeous older brothers.
Okay, that might not be a very good reason. But this is: Liam is 100% supportive of his older brother Chris (who you may recognize from Star Trek). He's so supportive, in fact, that he's completely cool with Chris snagging the lead role in the upcoming movie Thor—even if they both auditioned for the part! "I'm extremely happy for him," Liam says. "We're competitive, but not in a bad way. We make each other want to do more. I love my brothers."
- He's a true gentleman.
In The Last Song, Liam plays Will Blakelee, a privileged, high-profile jock with a seaside mansion, a controlling mother, some big dreams, a few dark secrets, and an endearingly sensitive side. But in real life, Liam is simply your average nice guy in an old-school way (think opening doors for the ladies), and this was precisely what his current girlfriend Miley Cyrus found charming. Boys, take note: Chivalry's not dead.
- He can laugh at himself.
"I played a lot of sports growing up, but volleyball wasn't my strongest point. So when they asked me if I knew how to play [because my character is a volleyball star], I told them I'd learn. I figured, how hard could it be? So we started shooting the scene in front of 300 extras, and it was just embarrassing—I'd think I just made a really good spike but the ball would come back right away!" He says, grinning, "I looked terrible."
- He looks like he's a great kisser.
"It's an awkward thing to kiss someone in front of 50 people. Do you tilt your head to the left or to the right; do you put tongue in or not?" But we're pretty sure he did just fine.
- He's very spontaneous.
"Miley and I actually shot that kissing scene in the water on our first day of filming. It wasn't planned at all—I didn't even know we were going to do it. The director suddenly told me to kiss Miley and I was like, 'Okay!' I didn't have time to think about it or be nervous about it. The best kind of kiss is when you grab someone and just go for it."
- He takes care of his body—and it shows!
"My wardrobe for this movie was basically board shorts and nothing else. So I was eating really healthy, working out every day, and playing volleyball a lot. I didn't want to have a gut. I mean, if you've got your top off, you'd want to look somewhat good."
- He's adorably dorky.
"I'm not as romantic or as cool as my character Will," he confesses. "I'm pretty awkward and goofy. I could send someone flowers to be sweet, I guess. But I'm just really stupid when it comes to girls."
- He strikes a balance between being a celebrity and being normal.
"I try to do as many things outside Hollywood as I can. I go to the beach and surf as often as possible. I mean, I love this town—it's opened so many doors for me—but I also try to get away from it sometimes. I think you've got to have a life outside of this industry."
"My buddies back home are still laying floors or doing construction, and they're all happy," he says. "But it's really hard work, physically. Having experienced that kind of job makes me appreciate everything I have right now. This role is such a huge thing for me."
