There’s no doubt that Kim Chiu was one of the best-dressed celebrities at the recently concluded ABS-CBN Ball. For this year’s look, Kim traded her usual princess ball gown for this breathtaking modern Filipiniana dress inspired by the barong.
In her latest YouTube vlog, Kim gave a behind-the-scenes look as she prepared for the ABS-CBN Ball. The actress shared that it is her 13th time to attend a ball: “Since napunta ako sa mundo ng showbiz, nagkaroon ako ng debut, nagkaroon ako ng mga ball, awards nights, so I get the chance na magsuot ng mga gowns, [hair and makeup], and gusto ko i-transform nila ako to a princess.”
Kim opened up and said that it has always been her wish to get made up and recalled a time when she’d play dress-up with her Barbie dolls. “This is one of the moments na nilo-look forward ko yearly. Though meron nang pressure kasi dahil parang [hindi] ka puwedeng magkamali sa susuotin mo,” Kim revealed.
Kim’s vlog shows the very first time that the actress got to fit her stunning traje de Magdalena created by Pampanga-based designer Benj Leguiab IV. Together with her stylist Adrianne Concepcion, Kim said that how they came across Benj was “meant to be.”
Since this year’s ABS-CBN Ball theme is a departure from the usual dress code, Adrianne revealed that they only had three and a half weeks to prepare. She said, “Walang gagawa ng gown in less than a month and we contacted this designer, he’s from Pampanga. I called [Benj], sabi ko, ‘Hi, I know it’s last minute, but can you accommodate us to dress Kim for the ball?’ Surprise, it was meant to be and nasa Manila siya that afternoon!”
Kim and Adrianne shared that while they were brainstorming Kim’s look for the ball, Benj showed them a Filipiniana design that he made from scratch two months before. Adrianne shared, “Nagbabakasakali siya na baka mayroon siyang bibihisan for the ball.”
As Benj unveiled the dress for the first time during their fitting, both Kim and Adrianne were speechless. Kim said, “Parang wala akong masabi. Eto talaga yung na-imagine namin.”
The designer revealed that Kim’s gown was actually handmade and embroidered manually. Adrianne commented, “It’s like you’re wearing a piece of Pampanga with you.”
In a quick interview with Benj, the 28-year-old designer revealed that he has been making dresses for the last two years. What’s even more impressive is that he is a self-taught designer and learned everything he knows thanks to YouTube.
