On February 14, Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) Organization introduced the 52 contestants to this year’s MUP pageant that is scheduled on May 3, 2020, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The winner will represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant this year.
In a Facebook post, MUP gave a closer look at the 52 contestants who wore traditional and modern Filipiniana attire:
Shamcey Supsup, the third runner up in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant and the director of the MUP Organization, said in an interview with ABS-CBN News, “We will try our very best to produce a Miss Universe Philippines candidate who can really represent our country and be able to showcase what we have.”
In the last 50 years, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) was tasked to look for and crown the country’s representative to the Miss Universe pageant. But on December 9, 2019, the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) announced that the Philippine candidate to the pageant will be selected by a brand-new panel of experts under the MUP Organization.
In December 2019, the MUP Organization officially opened the applications to this year’s pageant.
Shamcey was happy with the turnout of applications and said, “I’m honored that we were able to find amazing women from all around the Philippines to take part in this journey. I’m amazed kasi I saw some of them during the screening and parang ngayon pa lang may transformation na. What more after the two months of preparation for the ultimate pageant?”
