It's now been more than two years since the How I Met Your Mother finale personally victimized us all—and replaced Lost as the go-to reference for controversial TV endings. Fans were so pissed that they literally petitioned for an improved alternative ending...and they got one. Now the HIMYM universe is expanding, with a spinoff called How I Met Your Father officially in development at Fox, per the Hollywood Reporter.
The spinoff was created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, both writers on NBC's new hit tearjerker This Is Us. It'll be told from the female POV, again chronicling the story of how the lead character met her now-spouse, and it'll feature a completely new set of characters and writers. HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will be executive producers on the spinoff, but won't be directly involved because they have a deal at competing studio Sony.
If this all sounds weirdly familiar, you're not crazy; a spinoff under the very similar title How I Met Your Dad was commissioned in 2014. It had Greta Gerwig as its lead, Meg Ryan as its narrator, and made it to the pilot stage but failed to get picked up to series. Here's hoping this new one'll be less Joey, more Frasier.
