Joem Bascon: Daring Charmer

We'd like to reminisce about the (more than) half-naked men who graced our pages in September last year. And so, we bring you one of the boldest of all.
Cosmo is no stranger to the allure of Joseph Emmanuel Bascon—as early as 2007, when he was just starting out in the biz, we already crowned him as one of our Centerfolds. Even though he first turned heads in show business because of his resemblance to Piolo Pascual, Joem has been quick to build a name for himself as an actor and not just as somebody’s doppelganger. In fact, he had already earned an acting plum barely a year into his showbiz career!

He has churned out quality work for the big and small screen--among them for ABS-CBN’s Dahil May Isang Ikaw and most notably in the 2009 Cinemalaya entry Sanglaan, an indie film. In the upcoming soap Habang May Buhay, the rugged hottie will be sharing the screen with Judy Ann Santos, an actress whom he has always wanted to work with, as he reveals in this CosmoTV exclusive.

Joem is reportedly going steady with actress Meryll Soriano, but we don’t care—we love him just the same! Read on to learn this rugged actor’s musings on career, love—and even Piolo!

Q: You seemed to have surpassed the Piolo Pascual comparison. How do you feel about that?

At least nalagpasan na namin ‘yung lagi akong kino-compare kay Piolo. I’m very happy na wala na ako sa shadow niya.

Q: Which genre do you prefer: comedy or drama?

As an actor kasi kailangan mong matuto ng comedy, kailangan mong matuto ng drama, kailangan mong matutong mag-action. Kahit ano, para makilala ka as a versatile actor, para hindi ka lang makilala sa isang theme, sa drama lang o sa action lang. Mas maganda kasi ‘yung nata-try mo lahat.

Q: Do you prefer to do roles for indie films or mainstream TV?

Q: How did it feel to win the Breakthrough Performance by an Actor plum in the 2007 Golden Screen Awards for your role in Batanes--so early in your showbiz career?

Mga one year pa lang [ako sa showbiz nung] nakuha ko ‘yung award. Sobrang happy kasi ‘di ko akalaing mananalo ako ng award for [Batanes]. Siguro it was a blessing na dumating bigla for me. After that kasi dumating ‘yung ibang projects.

Q: Tells us about
your indie film, Sanglaan.

In Sanglaan, I’m a seaman looking for an apartment tapos 'yung nahanap kong apartment, sa taas ng isang pawnshop which is run by Ms. Tessie Tomas. Then 'yung nagwo-work dun si Ina Feleo, siya 'yung parang grade school classmate ko na may crush sa akin for a very long time. Nagkaroon ng time and chance na magkasama kami for a short period of time while I’m waiting for work. Seaman kasi. So doon nagre-revolve ang story namin.

Q: Now we'd like to know how you are in real life when you're in love.

Nababaliw ako (laughs). I’m always happy. Halata siya ‘pag may eksena. One time kailangan may crying scene, hindi ako makaiyak. Mahirap siya. Hindi siya ganoon kabilis. Parang sobrang saya [ko]. Nandoon pa ako sa state ng kasiyahan noon.
