When you grow up in the limelight, it can be difficult to stay true to who you are. And for Julia Barretto, being born into a prominent entertainment family and entering showbiz at a young age has given her challenging cards to deal with. But for the 24-year-old actress, model, and entrepreneur, her career and craft have only become ways to explore, connect with, and express her authentic self.
Over a decade has passed since her debut in Kokey, and we knew that we were due for a catchup with Julia! Cosmopolitan Philippines sat down and listened to her share about her growth and insights, journey with her brand The Juju Club, and plans for the coming year.
With both of her parents in showbiz, Julia came into the world surrounded by cameras and magazine covers with her family at the front and center. Her aunts Claudine and Gretchen notably carry her surname, as both of them dominated Philippine cinema in the ‘90s and 2000s. It was probably inevitable that Julia would eventually enter the scene, but she has done a lot more than following the footsteps of the women in her family. Julia has carved out her own identity.
“I’ve definitely become braver and more courageous as an artist,” Julia shared, looking back at the past three years of her life, and sharing that change always comes with its fair share of discomfort. “As I grow older, I look for roles that challenge me as an [actress] and that will help me grow…[there] are still [so many] stories I could tell that I haven’t told yet.”
Julia’s recent works include Between Maybes (2019) when she took on the role of the adventurous, fiery Hazel Ilagan. In 2020, she also starred in the zombie thriller film Block Z, where she played Princess Joy and fought the undead during a viral outbreak. However, Julia’s intent to create and pursue her own business finally made her forefront in the past year, when she launched The Juju Club.
“I want to look back at my life and feel assured that I was able to try and do a lot of things,” she shared, expressing how developing her own lifestyle brand was new, challenging, and exciting for her. “The Juju Club is everything I genuinely love and it’s something I wanted to share with everybody of all ages.”
“The Juju Club is a one-stop-shop, a happy place that will give you so much joy,” she told us, before sharing that the inspiration behind it was her love for accessories—clamps, scrunchies, shades, and other pieces that define Julia’s style.
But for the entrepreneur, The Juju Club is also her way to share good energy. “Growing up, I was always a positive person. I believe in good energy and I love to surround myself with people with good energy,” she said, emphasizing that her brand also promotes her belief that good vibes must be shared with others. And in the showbiz world where things can get dark and toxic, it’s truly heartening and hopeful that Julia has kept this philosophy all her life.
Creating The Juju Club was not without its challenges. “I’d like to believe that I made the right decision in launching the brand online,” Julia said, acknowledging that the onset of the pandemic factored into many of the decisions she made as a business owner.
Nonetheless, she never forgets to recognize and appreciate the people she works with, especially since The Juju Club was well-received among her fans. “I still get overwhelmed every day. I am just filled with so much love and gratitude [for how the brand was received]. It’s a good reminder that [people] still believed in my vision, imagination, and dreams.”
For those who love The Juju Club, you can look forward to tons more surprises in the coming year. “In January, we’re going to be releasing a new Juju collection,” she said excitedly, and also hinted that they’re also preparing for Valentine’s and summer, too.
Julia is also looking forward to her upcoming films, which will be released next year. “I also want to focus on creating more films [in 2022],” she said, feeling nervous, excited, but still grateful that she now wears two hats as a business owner and as an actress.
And because Julia is busier than ever, she has to rely on her tech to help her stay productive. When we asked her what she uses to stay on top of her work, she was thrilled to mention the HUAWEI nova 9. “It’s helped me take a lot of product shots [that we use for The Juju Club],” she said, sharing that its 50MP Ultra Vision Camera is packed with a variety of features. “You can go from wide to portrait, and the quality remains no matter how far or close you get,” she said, saying that she uses the smartphone to take photos to send to her team.
What she loves most about the phone is its continuous front and rear recording feature. “You can film from the back camera and the selfie camera at the same time and it just blows my mind,” she said, “Everywhere I go, I try to capture what I’m seeing and my reaction. It’s perfect for vlogging!” On top of being a great productivity and creativity tool, the HUAWEI nova 9 has served as her daily personal companion in the past several months.
Julia is turning 25 in March, and the past year has definitely been one of growth and change for her. To embrace change and to welcome a new perspective have been the top lessons learned for the young creative professional. “You have to adapt and expect change,” she said when we asked her what advice she can give to aspiring entrepreneurial women like herself.
“We’re always gonna evolve; we’re always gonna change, and that should be fine. If you step out of your comfort zone, you’ll notice a lot of growth in [yourself]. And that’s a good thing,” she continued.
And for Julia, the HUAWEI nova 9 is also representative of her ever-changing self. Its iconic Star Orbit Ring, which makes the device even more eye-catching, is reminiscent of her legacy as a professional who has worked in her industry for a long time. But its slim build, lightweight body, and advanced camera technology also embody her constantly evolving, and advancing self.
“The phone is super lightweight, and I love staring at its starry blue color and [the signature Star Orbit Ring],” she said, casually mentioning that the HUAWEI nova 9 is perfect for content creators like herself and just matches her total aesthetic, too. She reminds us that the tools that you use to stay productive should also match your personality and who you are.
