On the epic third episode of season eight’s Game of Thrones known as “The Long Night,” we witnessed Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams, bring down The Night King and his army of wights with smooth well-orchestrated martial moves.
According to Inverse, Maisie learned Filipino martial arts and was trained in Arnis, a combat sport from the Philippines.
According to stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam, “Arnis is a style we drew from. My team comes from a very wide background of martial artists and weapons experts, so we draw from all styles we possibly can. Filipino stick work is definitely one of them for this piece, as are double sword work.”
Maisie’s training was used in scenes where she had to fight off wights in very tight spots. For this, Arya used her spear made by Gendry that can be separated into two sticks to allow more movement in such a tight space.
Irlam said, “When it comes to double stick work, [it’s] the Filipino martial art.”
