Millennial Must-Watch: TV Shows + Movies Starring Paulo Avelino

ICYMI, Paulo Avelino is returning to the big screen as real-life hero Gregorio del Pilar! He's starring in the upcoming sequel to 2015's Heneral LunaGoyo: Ang Batang Heneral (set for nationwide release on September 5).

But if you can't wait that long, take a walk down memory lane and revisit the many shows and movies that made you fall in love with him. Side note: We're still hoping we could legally watch I'm Drunk, I Love You online, but until then, you can catch the occasional screening in Cinema '76!

Aswang (2011)

Paulo's career began in GMA-7 when he joined the talent reality show, StarStruck in 2006. He eventually transferred to ABS-CBN in 2011 where he bagged his first lead role in Regal Films' well-received horror, Aswang. Helmed by Jerrold Tarog (who would later direct him in more projects), the movie tells the story of Hasmin (Lovi Poe), an aswang who rescues two children from a group of hitmen. She eventually falls for Paulo's character, Daniel, a reluctant member of the hitmen.

Walang Hanggan (2012)

Paulo's big break came when he signed on for the teleserye hit, Walang Hanggan. Based on the 1991 classic film Hihintayin Ka Sa Langit, the series spans three generations and mainly centers on the forbidden romance of Marco (Richard Gomez), the wealthy heir to a flourishing winery, and Emily (Dawn Zulueta), the daughter of a farmer. Paulo plays Marco's son, Nathan, the third wheel to the love triangle of Coco Martin and Julia Montes' characters.

Paulo also dabbles in indie films, including the 2011 Cinemalaya entry Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa and 2017's MMFF Best Picture winner, Ang Larawan. One of his most memorable (and heartbreaking) indie roles is Jerrold Tarog's Sana Datireuniting Paulo with Lovi Poe. The latter plays Andrea, a woman who gets cold feet on her wedding when she meets the photographer (played by Paulo), who reminds her of a love she once had.

Status: It's Complicated (2013)

Inspired by the 1979 sexy comedy Salawahan by Ishmael Bernal, this movie revolves around two best friends who have opposing views on sex and romance. Manny (Jake Cuenca) promises to seriously commit in a relationship, while the conservative Jerry (Paulo) decides to play the field. The ensemble cast also includes Eugene Domingo, Maja Salvador, and Solenn Heussaff.

Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon (2014)

Bea Alonzo takes on two roles in this teleserye, portraying the shy and mild-mannered Rose, the heir to a massive chocolate company; and Emmanuelle, a feisty lawyer who helps the former after she is wrongfully accused of murder. Paulo, on the other hand, is her leading man, Patrick, a chocolatier with secret intentions.

Bridges of Love (2015)

In 2015, Paulo played Carlos, the brother to Jericho Rosales' Gael. After a tragedy tears them apart, the grown-up Carlos and Gael now lead separate lives. Carlos is adopted by a wealthy architect, while Gael grows up in poverty and dreams of a better life. Their paths cross again through Mia (Maja Salvador), a club dancer who captures both of their hearts.

Heneral Luna (2015)

Director Jerrold Tarog makes a third appearance on this list with the commercial and critical success, Heneral Luna. Although the biopic is primarily about Antonio Luna (played by John Arcilla), Paulo stole the show (and everyone's hearts!) in his appearance as the young general, Gregorio del Pilar.

On The Wings of Love (2015)

James Reid and Nadine Lustre had fans swooning in their first primetime series as Clark and Leah, a young couple forced to marry each other in order to legally stay in the United States. Paulo eventually joins the cast midway through the series as Simon, who gets in the way of Clark and Leah's relationship.

The Promise of Forever (2017)

Famously filmed on location in European countries such as Prague, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Poland, this teleserye revolves around Paulo's character, Lorenzo, a man who has been alive since 1865! The plot follows his life through the decades up until the present day, where he falls for Sophia (Ritz Azul).
