We've seen enough romantic movies to know how it typically goes: boy meets girl, they might hate each other, they eventually fall in love, and the story is over. But every now and then, we stumble upon a gem that does things a little differently.

From time travel to even unhappy (but realistic) endings, we round up some unconventional romance movies that are perfect for your next binge-watch sesh.

When We First Met (2018)

Written and directed by Jerrold Tarog, Sana Dati revolves around Andrea (Lovi Poe), a young woman who is set to marry Robert (TJ Trinidad). She suddenly gets cold feet on her wedding day when she meets Dennis (Paulo Avelino), who reminds her of a man from her past. Heartbreaking and emotional in the best (and most painful) way, Sana Dati is a refreshing take on Filipino romantic movies.

If you needed more reason to see it, this Filipino indie movie was so popular upon release that a sequel is reportedly in the works!

5 Centimeters Per Second (2007)

Pinoys are no stranger to tear-jerking anime movies (hello, Kimi No Na Wa!), and this 2007 pick is just as heartfelt. Told in three interconnected parts, the movie follows Takaki and Akari, who are both immediately drawn to each other even in elementary school. Circumstances tear them apart and many years pass, but they still desperately long for each other. Cue the tears!

That Thing Called Tadhana (2014)

This 2014 movie kickstarted the hugot craze for a good reason and remains one of the most memorable Pinoy romance flicks to date.
