Unlike other beauty queens who crown their successors in sparkly evening gowns, H’hen stepped onstage barefoot while wearing the traditional dress of the ethnic minority group that she is part of, the Ede people.
Posting on Instagram, H’hen said, “I am truly proud to bear the title of Miss Universe Vietnam.”
Her successor, Nguyen Khánh Vân, will represent Vietnam at the Miss Universe 2020 competition.
H’hen, who was expected to be one of the top contenders for Miss Universe 2018 but ended up in the pageant’s Top 5 contestants, touched the hearts of people with her inspiring life story.
H’hen defied her tribe’s customs and moved to Ho Chi Minh where she financed her way through college by working as a nanny and working odd jobs like serving food and cleaning houses. Her luck changed when she started modeling in 2014 and joined Vietnam’s Top Model a year later. She spent two years preparing for the Miss Vietnam pageant.
