Summer isn’t just about beaches and vacations. It also means blockbuster movies filled with big-name stars, and even bigger budgets! So if you can’t beat the heat with a trip to the local seaside, then grab a jacket and head on to the nearest theater! No date? So what?
This month, your movie ticket can take you from a trip to the woods, where horror or adventure awaits, to the grandest parties thrown by the Great Gatsby. Or get your friends involved, and take on the biggest criminal masterminds either on land, or amongst the stars! And June might not be here yet, but there are already two weddings that will have everyone talking.
There’s definitely something for everyone in theaters this May. Check out what's in store for you:
Dark Skies (May 1, 2013)
Dark Skies is a great family drama that deals with parenthood and the helplessness that comes when your children reach their teenage years. Oh, and there are aliens too. But is it scary? Well, let’s just say it’s better to watch this film with a group of friends. With a big group of friends.
The Bride and the Lover (May 1, 2013)
Another local mistress movie? Well, yes. How is this one different? For one thing, it doesn’t have Anne Curtis in it. Jokes aside, this is already being touted as the must-watch movie in the local industry—for the fight sequence in the middle of a wedding scene that took almost a whole day to shoot!
The Evil Dead (May 8, 2013)
A remake of a cult classic, this version of The Evil Dead promises a scarier experience—which gives you an excuse to cuddle with your special someone in the guise of being afraid! And to draw your victim date to watch it with you, tell him it’s about a group of friends who stumble upon a demon wanting to unleash hell on earth.
The Big Wedding (May 8, 2013)
Robert de Niro and Diane Keaton have to pretend that they’re still happily married for the sake of their son's conservative future family. Thing is, de Niro’s current girlfriend, Susan Sarandon, is catering the big event! There are so many ways for a wedding to go wrong, and this movie will do its best to show it all, with a promise of a lot of laughter—and lots of hotness via Ben Barnes and Topher Grace. So grab your chicas and make this the centerpiece of your girls’ night out!
Star Trek Into Darkness (May 15, 2013)
The sequel to J.J. Abrams' reboot of the Star Trek franchise finds the crew facing a new evil—and he looks positively gorgeous. In this film, Captain Kirk leads his team on a vendetta mission to bring down the psychopath agent who destroyed Starfleet and Earth. Enjoy geeking out while watching the franchise with your best pals. And by geeking out, we also mean gushing over Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Wait, here’s a message from J.J. Abrams. He says, “Girls... You’re welcome.”
The Great Gatsby (May 17, 2013)
Tobey Maguire narrates a love story about a man who would do anything for the woman he loves and the complexities of the relationships they cannot break to be together. Set in the Roaring '20s, The Great Gatsby draws you in with the era, the drama, the clothes, and Di Caprio—but will make you stay for a romance to remember.
Fast & Furious 6 (May 24, 2013)
All roads lead here, as the tag line says. And this time, the boys are being recruited to stop a British criminal mastermind in exchange for pardon that would allow them to return to their home country. If your boyfriend or husband—or even your dad—wants to watch the film for the cars, don’t waste time arguing. Fast & Furious has something for the female audience, too, and that's Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Luke Evans, and Dwayne Johnson.
Epic (May 24, 2013)
From the makers of Rio, we have another grand adventure waiting to happen—in 3D! Amanda Seyfried voices the female protagonist who magically shrinks down in size; to find her way back home—and her father, she must join a war between good and evil—where she will also learn about the magic of love. Sounds like the perfect date movie? That’s because it is, and it doesn’t even matter if your date for the night is your boyfriend, your little sis, or your friends.
The Hangover III (May 29, 2013)
In the last film of the series, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis have to turn their backs on their old antics as they figure out a way to save their buddy, played by Justin Bartha. And as it is the end of a trilogy, expect this movie to be crazier than the first two combined. Catch this film on a night out with friends—just make sure no one gets drunk.
