A lawyer, who was defending a wealthy man in a Tennessee, USA rape trial, has caused outrage after telling the jury that women are "especially good" at lying because "they're the weaker sex". The man in question, Steve Farese, made the comments during closing arguments of the case, in which Mark Giannini was accused of raping a woman who went to his house for a job interview.
"People can be very good at lying," Farese said. "Women can be especially good at it because they're the weaker sex and we ... and we want to protect them and not have anybody take advantage of them, at least I do." SRSLY???
Accusing the alleged victim of dishonesty, he continued: "They can’t make chicken salad out of chicken squat… Don't tinkle on my leg and tell me it's raining. I know what's going on."
According to Commercial Appeal, Farese also highlighted that, at the time of the alleged rape, the woman was wearing "a sexy halter top". As if that matters! She testified that Giannini choked her in his isolated mansion, and the next thing she remembered, she was waking up in a hospital.
A jury of 11 women and three men found Giannini not guilty of aggravated rape, while Farese is coming under fire for his ludicrous and downright offensive remarks.
Deborah Clubb, executive director of the Memphis Area Women's Council, said, "It's despicable. It's absolutely despicable. I'm stunned. I really am."
She continued: "He stood in front of 11 women on a jury and said women are liars? That just doesn't even make the first bit of sense and it's despicable. Doesn't even sound like professional strategy for an attorney.
“What we wear, where we are, whether we are drunk, is not the reason for rape," she said, seemingly addressing Farese's halter top comments. "Rape happens because men rape ... And it's wrong. It's a crime."
