Taylor Swift, Queen of Easter Eggs, just gave the deets on a bunch of music hints you might have missed in the last few months. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, she said the teasers for this era of songs go back TWO WHOLE YEARS. Take that one time she did a video about one of the old songs, for example:
"There was a specific occasion where I did a Spotify vertical video for 'Delicate' and I painted my nails the exact color tones that I wanted the next album to be. Some people picked up on it immediately, others picked up on it a few months down the line," she said.
One of her favorite places to throw in easter eggs is in her music videos. When it comes to the "ME!" vid, she pointed out the Christmas tree, the Dixie Chicks picture, and the Lover neon sign, but she didn't explain what any of them actually mean. She just said they were, in fact, easter eggs. Most die-hard fans picked up on those, but Taylor confirmed they were totally clues.
Another one? She mentioned Panic! At The Disco in an interview with Elle UK in February 2019, long before she released a song with their lead singer.
Fans picked up on an easter egg in her merch line too, which she confirmed. On her calendar, she put a wax seal on April 13, and she said it was because she always wanted to start a 13-day countdown on the 13th—which she did before she released "ME!" on April 26.
Here's where it gets interesting. Taylor talked about why she chose to put a snake in the "ME!" video. "A lot of the time, I'll pick something that symbolizes something else, like I'll pick a snake as the mascot for feeling misunderstood, or, you know, being somebody who's not going to strike unless they're stepped on, or a butterfly which is like, breaking free of that darkness and fluttering into the light."
HMMMM. Is that some subtle Kim K shade? TBD.
She posted this palm tree picture the day she finished her album, and fans definitely figured that out based on the number of palm tress. Taylor said they symbolize rebirth, new beginnings, and positive energy.
She said her go-to easter eggs are 13s and cats, and gave a potential clue about her album release date. "I will pick dates, really important dates, just because the numbers of that date add up to 13. It rules my life." Have fun trying to dissect that.
Last one! She said there are STILL easter eggs in the "Look What You Made Me Do" video that people haven't found. That sounds like a challenge, right??
