ICYMI, BTS isn't just dominating music charts—they might also be giving your mental health a major glow-up! According to a 2024 study published in the Journal La Sociale, the more you listen to BTS, the better your psychological well-being can become.

BTS Is The Mental Health Booster You Didn't Know You Needed

The study examined the Indonesian ARMY (a.k.a. BTS fan group) as respondents and found a significant positive relationship between the duration of their listening to the boy band's music and their feelings of happiness, confidence, and life satisfaction. And most of them are attributed to the group's songs, which are packed with messages of self-love, hope, and resilience.

During the research, many fans credit BTS with helping them accept themselves, stay motivated, and see life from a more positive perspective. This emotional connection goes beyond just mood boosts. Participants described the feeling that whenever they listen to BTS songs, it feels like the latter truly gets them.

"BTS' music can help fans identify themselves, deal with their emotions, strengthen their social relationships, provide motivation and inspiration, and entertain them," the study revealed.

The study linked this sense of connection to BTS' unique way of engaging with their fans, often acknowledging ARMY directly in their music and performances. This consistent recognition makes fans feel genuinely seen and valued, creating an emotional anchor that can be especially grounding during stressful or uncertain times.

"Whether it is the message in the lyrics, the style of the music, or the relationship with the group members plays a significant role in this influence," the study wrote.

"Apart from the duration of listening to BTS music, other variables such as self-identification with the group, the type of music chosen, and the way fans interact with the music can influence psychological well-being (PWB). Thus, future research could consider these factors," it added.

While the study acknowledged that music in general can provide a positive boost to well-being, it found that for BTS in particular, social connections are one of the driving forces helping fans cope with stress and anxiety. Being an ARMY also means being part of a global community, and that sense of belonging plays a huge role in mental health.

The research pointed out that the shared love for BTS helps fans build friendships across borders. Whether it’s bonding over music streaming, swapping photocards, or meeting up at concerts, these connections can become powerful sources of support and joy.

Of course, the researchers note that mental health is influenced by many factors, and music is just one piece of the puzzle. But this study makes it clear: the BTS effect is all about community, connection, and feeling seen.
