Rosé Reveals Why BLACKPINK Took A Three-Year Hiatus—And Calls The Break A Healthy Decision

Published on Jan 30, 2026
BLACKPINK has always been in our area. Between the world tours, record-breaking releases, and fashion influences, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa spent nearly a decade on a nonstop run. So when the group decided to hit pause in 2023—shortly after wrapping up their Born Pink World Tour in September—it got BLINKs talking (and spiraling a little).
According to Rosé, the group's nearly three-year hiatus was a deeply considered and, ultimately, "healthy decision" for all four members.
"It didn't happen over one conversation," the Grammy-nominated singer explained during a Call Her Daddy appearance. At the time, BLACKPINK was nearing the end of a long-standing contract, with fans eagerly waiting to hear what would come next. Instead of rushing into a decision, the members chose to give themselves some space. "We allowed each other enough time to really think through what we as a group and individually want."
Even without any new group activities, BLACKPINK was far from inactive. Throughout 2024-2025, the girls stayed booked and busy with their individual projects—dropping solo albums, taking on acting projects, and landing major partnerships with luxury brands.
Ofc, these solo releases came with the question: "Is BLACKPINK still a thing?" The reassuring answer is yes.

Although the members re-signed with YG Entertainment for group activities in late 2023, several also established their own labels and management teams. The setup gave them more freedom and creative control over their individual careers without letting go of BLACKPINK. The "hiatus" was really about stepping back from group releases, not stepping away from the group entirely.
For Rosé, the time apart was something they had never truly experienced since their 2016 debut. "We are also growing up right now," she shared. "We haven't had enough time to be fully ourselves or explore that ever—we weren't really allowed that." The pause allowed them to explore who they are outside the group and cheer each other on while doing so. "To see all the things that the members have accomplished—it's really fun to watch."
While Rosé didn't go into the specifics of the renewed contract, she emphasized how different the process felt this time around. "We're more aware now and we understand the weight of signing these things as musicians," she said, noting how experience has made the group more protective of both themselves and their legacy.
When asked if the group had ever discussed what would happen if one of them didn't want to continue in BLACKPINK, Rosé candidly replied, "We will understand, and like any relationship, if one person isn't ready for something, then it should just be respected. We trust that every decision made is the right decision for each person."
Oh, and just to put your mind at ease, BLACKPINK is very much together and set to release their third mini album, DEADLINE, on February 27.
