It's Time To Stop Labeling Big Dancers As 'Plus Size'

This 15-year-old sheds light on body diversity in ballet.

About two months ago, 15-year-old Lizzy Howell posted the above video of her in ballet class to Instagram. It's unclear exactly why, but in the past few days, the video has recirculated on Twitter and other social sites, gaining Lizzy more than 40,000 new followers and a lot of admirers. Though many of them have been calling her a "plus-size" ballerina, Lizzy prefers not to use that term, instead focusing on how her love of dance proves anyone can do anything.

"If I can do everything that anyone else can, why should I be in a separate category?" she told BuzzFeed of the "plus-size" label. "I’m very happy that someone has discovered me," she explained of introducing body diversity in ballet to a new audience. "It’s a whole new thing for people where I live."

Lizzy is also happy her dancing has gone viral because it raises awareness about pseudotumor cerebri, the condition she has in which pressure increases in the skull for no apparent reason. Dancing has helped her deal with both the condition and the corresponding anxiety.
