The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) will hold a new round of voter registration starting tomorrow. Reactivation and transfer of records will also be available.

While suffrage is a right, the law requires the following from a registrant:

  • at least 18 years old
  • a resident of the Philippines for at least one year
  • a resident of the city/municipality wherein he intends to vote for at least 6 months prior to an election

You'll only need to bring a valid ID to prove residence and fill out the necessary forms and biometric data in the registration sites.

Registration is permanent and must be done only once but it can be deactivated if one fails to vote in two consecutive elections. In the case of the latter, reactivation of records must be done. Meanwhile, a voter who transferred residence must apply for a transfer of records only.

If you think you should register this time, just go to the local COMELEC offices and satellite registration booths in malls and barangays from January 20, 2020 to September 30, 2021.

However, COMELEC announced that the schedule will be different in the areas affected by the Taal Volcano eruption, including municipalities in the Batangas province and other areas affected by the ashfall and earthquakes. It will also not resume in Makilala, North Cotabato due to the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the town on December 15, 2019, and in 23 municipalities in Palawan due to a plebiscite on May 11, 2020.
