Pedder Street, a key road in Hong Kong’s Central business district, was filled with tear gas on November 11 as riot police dispersed waves of people who had gathered for a general strike.

According to a report from Hong Kong Free Press, demonstrators created road barricades using bamboo poles, and bunkered down behind umbrellas to defend themselves from the gas, as seen in this footage.

November 11 saw an escalation of violence throughout Hong Kong, with police firing tear gas on school campuses, according to reports from the South China Morning Post; one protester shot at point-blank range in the Sai Wan Ho district; and a man set on fire on a pedestrian overpass.
