Summer Trend Report: Color, Floral, Metal + Natural Fabrics, Chunky Accessories

Two local designers share tips and identify key summer trends seen in their latest creations, all paired with Ipanema footwear, at Philippine Fashion Week.

Gone are the days when resortwear was limited to tank tops and shorts. With local designers consistently churning out one fabulous summer collection after another, we now have a wide selection of maxi dresses, flowing frocks, and sophisticated maillots to choose from.

If your style is sultry and more on the daring side, turn to designer Dave Ocampo's sexy body-hugging pieces for inspiration. Meanwhile, if you prefer something more flowy, loose, and feminine, you'd want to check out Raoul Ramirez' creations. Both presented their Spring/Summer 2012 collection at the Ipanema runway show during Philippine Fashion Week, and we asked them to share more summer fashion tips and trends, so you'll know what works and what doesn't. Read on for our short chat with them, then launch the gallery to browse their collections for more summer styling inspiration.

Tell us about your collection.

Raoul: My collection has almost all the colors of the rainbow. Since the design of Ipanema is all about colors and the tropics, I came up with the same concept for that, specifically for the collection they’re releasing.

Dave: For this season, ang naisip ko kasi is color-blocking. My color palette includes violet, fuchsia, yellow, green, and blue. And then for the silhouette, I wanted it body-hugging. I used stretch material, kasi 'pag summer, kailangan dikit 'yung material sa katawan. For accessories, I used flowers and bangles.

Can you share some summer dressing tips?

Raoul: Dress up as comfortably as you can. Wear all-natural fabrics or materials, like cotton and linen. Both are lightweight so they're comfy.

Dave: Wear basic clothes. 'Pag pupunta ka sa beach, bring a wrap-around you can mix and match with swimwear, para 'pag nakita ng mga tao, hindi sila “Ay, 'yan na naman suot mo?” or something.

What's hot now when it comes to accessories?

Raoul: Well, this summer is all about metal. Egyptian. So you see a lot of metal, engraving, hammered. For shoes, of course, it’s always wedge. Flats and thick wooden heels are also in.

Dave: It's more on chunky. Light and colorful. Earrings made of shells.
